SPLA kills 6 Sudanese troops

The Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA) announced killing six Sudanese military troops in South Kordofan on Monday, 22 October, the group's spokesman, Arno Ngutolo Lodi, told Radio Dabanga.

Lodi said that SPLA forces attacked a convoy belonging to the Sudanese army northwest of Dilling, adding the army suffered heavy material losses.

According to the spokesman, the family of Sudanese soldier Mutasim Abd al-Rahman was also captured. He added that the movement also seized weapons and ammunition from the vehicles.

Radio Dabanga could not reach the Sudanese army for comments.

Three children injured

On the other hand, three children got injured as a result of aerial bombings in the village of Taylo, in the Nuba Mountains, South Kordofan, last Thursday, 18 October, Lodi told Radio Dabanga.

He said the an Antonov airplane carried out the bombings that injured the siblings Yasser, Maysoon and Mayzool Tayyar Khamees.

The spokesman said the following villages were also targeted: El-Lebo, Tabolo, El-Hibail Al-Atmor and Umm Sirdiba, and the city of Boram, in Umm Doreen locality.

Lodi said intensive air raids between Thursday and Sunday took place in the region and that more than 20 bombs were dropped during that period. He pointed out that mostly plantations and central points in villages were affected.

• Agents in mid-size markets aggressively hit the online marketing world, and don't even necessarily attend every showing of a house because of the high volume of listings they have.

• Luxury agents generally take a 5 percent commission.

• Mid-size agents pursue families who are relocating, whereas luxury agents pursue clients looking for trophy properties.?

Death by defibrillator: Officials warn of hacking risk

Implanted defibrillators could be a target for hacking, a new report warns. More than 130,000 were implanted in patients in the U.S. in 2009.

It sounds like a scenario out of a James Bond movie: a villain spots his quarry and uses a small device to hack into the official?s heart defibrillator, sending a signal for mayhem. There?s chest grabbing, and a collapse, and alarms, but the bad guy walks free because there?s no gun, knife, poison dart -- no evidence at all a murder has been committed.

According to a recent report by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), a non-partisan agency that works for Congress, not only is such a scenario possible, there?s a growing danger that grandpa?s heart rhythm device, or, say, a child?s insulin pump ? any implantable device that can be accessed remotely -- ?could be susceptible to hacking.

But the GAO report suggests that the Food and Drug Administration, which approves and regulates such devices, has been behind the curve when it comes to security and now is calling for the agency to set guidelines for manufacturers to help combat the threat of hacking.

According to the?report, which had been requested by members of Congress in light of tests by researchers revealing the vulnerability of the medical technology, ?there have been four separate demonstrations in controlled settings showing that the intentional exploitation of vulnerabilities in certain medical devices is possible.? The report stressed that there have been no proven cases of anybody actually doing this for nefarious purposes.

Still, when he released the GAO report, Congressman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.), one of the requesting legislators, issued a statement saying that ??wireless medical devices are susceptible to increasingly advanced hacking techniques that could threaten patient health.?

The susceptibility stems largely from their wireless communications abilities, explained Nathanael Paul, chief scientist at the Center for Trustworthy Embedded Systems at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. In 2010, Paul and a colleague demonstrated they could hack into an insulin pump, like the one Paul himself wears to treat his Type 1 diabetes.

Thanks to wireless communication, doctors can download diagnostic information and health status from the device to a computer and make changes in the performance of a device without surgery. For example, defibrillators can be programmed using a wand that communicates with the device inside a patient?s chest.

But as anybody who has experienced neighborhood confusion over garage door openers operating the wrong doors can attest, that can leave devices vulnerable to attack or simple accident.

?This year, for example, a young lady in the Salt Lake City airport asked TSA if she should walk through a security device,? Paul recalled by way of illustration. ?TSA said yes, basing that on the experience of thousands of people with insulin pumps. She walked through and her pump responded in an unanticipated way that could have threatened her life.?

Causing a device to misfire intentionally to cause harm takes technical sophistication, but it?s certainly do-able, he said. And there are a lot of potential targets. According to a 2011 report from the World Society of Arrhythmias, in just one year, 2009, 133,262 defibrillators were implanted in patients in the United States -- 434 devices for every million people -- and that?s just one device for one condition.

Preventing potential hacking it might seem as simple as requiring a password for access. Another strategy could be to limit the distance devices can send information back and forth. The tests demonstrating vulnerability showed the range of some devices could be up to 300 feet. ?Paul has been exploring that possibility. Software changes are another avenue.

But enhancing security of a vital medical device isn?t as simple as it sounds. The primary purpose of any medical device is to preserve health, not keep out bad guys. Installing security software could put more demand on battery life, for example. And suppose a patient has a defibrillator, his doctor?s office is closed, and he feels chest pains? He could go to an emergency room, but, panicky, could easily forget the password. The ER doctors then could not get access to whatever the device has to tell them.

Whatever solutions are to be found, the onus for making sure manufacturers implement them has now fallen mainly on the FDA.

The GAO recommended the FDA make?security risks part of premarket approval just like FDA?s more traditional criteria, safety and effectiveness. It also suggested FDA begin working with other federal agencies whose primary duties focus more on cyber security, make the issue one of the things it monitors during postmarket review, and ?establish specific milestones for completing this review and implementing these changes.?

Markey, through his office, told NBC that FDA must ?place ?renewed emphasis? on the security of the devices under its purview. ?I look forward to hearing from the FDA on progress to address this risk,? he said.

The agency does seem to be gearing up to take a more aggressive stance. In its response to the GAO report, the FDA noted that it has recently begun collaborating with the Department of Homeland Security, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Department of Defense, and?law enforcement. The FDA?s Center for Devices and Radiological Health has also a National Postmarket Surveillance Plan to better track adverse events related to devices.

?FDA concurs with GAO that the agency continuously develop and implement new strategies designed to assist the agency in its medical device premarket review and postmarket surveillance efforts relative to information security,? agency spokesperson Michelle Bolek?told NBC.

The agency is studying the ways other industries are battling cyber security threats for any strategies manufacturers can incorporate into the devices. That?s where researchers like Paul come in. ???? ?

The FDA and industry have begun consulting with him and others, he said, and he?s optimistic about progress. ?I think they are doing a large amount of work. They are responding, and so are manufacturers,? said Paul, who doesn?t personally profit from such consulting.

He also argued that the potential risk to the security of medical devices is far outweighed by the benefits of the devices.

In other words, don?t panic.

San Jose, Calif.
It's as if original owner Sarah Winchester wanted her home to be haunted. The eccentric widow of William Winchester, founder of Winchester rifles, held nightly seances to gain guidance from spirits and her dead husband for the home?s design. The end result? A maze-like structure that took 38 years to build and includes twisting and turning hallways, dead ends, secret panels, a window built into a floor, staircases leading to nowhere, doors that open to walls, upside-down columns and rooms built, then intentionally closed off? ? all to ward off and confuse evil spirits.

Gardette-LaPrete House

This Greek revival home was the site of the one of the grisliest murders in New Orleans' history. A Turkish merchant, renting the home, was buried alive in the backyard and his harem entourage murdered. Years later, the French Quarter home is still said to be the site of the merchant's wanderings, and on certain nights, exotic music and incense from ancient parties waft from the home.

This historic home was moved to its current location in Savannah?by a local restoration expert. As work began on the house, workers reported odd noises and a male presence. Early on, they discovered a crypt on the building site half filled with water and covered it.

Despite the rumors of hauntings, the home was finished and was last on the market for $2.2 million in 2011. Although it's off the market now, there's no word of a buyer.

LaLaurie House
1140 Royal St, New Orleans
The LaLaurie House, like many haunted homes, has a pretty horrific back story. Owned by socialite Madame Delphine LaLaurie and her husband, Dr. Louis LaLaurie, the house was the reported setting for vicious cruelty against the couple's slaves. Reportedly the slaves were subjected to torturous medical experiments that went on unbeknownst to the New Orleans community until a fire broke out and? neighbors rushing to rescue discovered the gruesome scenes. The LaLauries fled the country due to the backlash, and the home passed through several owners, each who claimed to hear mysterious screams and see apparitions of the tortured slaves.

At one point actor Nicolas Cage owned the home, and while he said he never saw any ghosts, he wasn't immune to the home's sinister vibes; he lost the property to foreclosure in 2009.

San Diego
In 1857, an entrepreneurial Thomas Whaley took advantage of a deeply discounted property in San Diego's Old Town neighborhood that once held the area's hangings. He tore down the gallows and proceeded to build his Greek Revival brick home. However, soon after Whaley and his family moved in, they reported hearing heavy footsteps moving about the house. Even after the Whaleys moved out, various tenants reported seeing ghosts and hearing the footsteps.

Today the historic home is a museum and is open daily for tourists to see if they, too, hear and see the ghostly apparitions.

Franklin Castle has both a creepy history as well as a creepy exterior. Home to Hannes Tiedemann, the house was reportedly the site of many vicious murders. Built in 1864, the home has all the makings of a haunted mansion: stone tower and turrets, gargoyles and wrought-iron fencing, not to mention sounds of babies crying, doors slamming and footsteps.

According to the property history, the home was last sold for $260,000 in August 2011. No word yet, if the homeowners are having any eerie experiences.

McPike Mansion
Alton, IL
Haunted houses?? how about a whole haunted city? Alton claims to be the one of the most haunted areas in America and is home to McPike Mansion, which is host to a number of active ghosts.

There's no specific backstory to the ghostly going-ons, but visitors and residents of the brick manse have claimed to be hugged by an unseen woman, hear the laughter of children and see mysterious mists and orbs of light. As far as hauntings go, not too sinister.

Borden House

This home was the site of one of the most infamous crimes of all time: the murders of Andrew and Abby Borden, reportedly at the hands of Andrew's daughter Lizzie. As the nursery rhyme goes, Lizzie Borden took an ax and gave both her father and step-mother whacks. However, Lizzie was acquitted and moved out of the home.

The home of the murder still stands in Fall River and operates as a bed-and-breakfast, where guests report seeing Andrew and Abby wandering about.

Myrtles Plantation
Saint Francisville, La.
An antebellum home in a voodoo-rich area of Louisiana is the likely place for a haunted home. Built in?1796, Myrtles Plantation was taken over in 1808 by Clark Woodruff, his wife, Sara, and their three children. According to legend, Woodruff had a relationship with one of his slaves, Chloe, who was jealous of Woodruff's wife. Story goes that Chloe baked a birthday cake for Sara and the kids, including poisonous oleander leaves in the treat. Sara and two of their children died. Chloe confessed, but fellow slaves retaliated, hanging Chloe and dumping her body in the Mississippi.

Chloe isn't the only ghost said to haunt Myrtles Plantation. A Civil War solider was murdered on the steps of the home, and an ancient Native American burial ground is said to beneath the house. All this adds up to a home rich in creepy incidences.

Chambers Mansion
2220 Sacramento St, San Francisco, Calif.
Like most haunted homes, there's a bit of confusion surrounding the true story behind Chambers Mansion. Built in 1887, the home was named after its first owner, silver mine tycoon Richard Chambers, who lived in the home with two nieces who reportedly hated each other.

When Chambers died in 1901, the nieces inherited the mansion. One reportedly bought the house next door and moved in while the other sister, Claudia, stayed. Claudia was discovered cut in half in the mansion one day, due to a "farm implementation" accident. However, a ghost expert has claimed that Claudia was in fact murdered, and still haunts the Pacific Heights home today.

The death of 17 year old school girl after an accident with a CTU bus left the region shocked. The death was an affirmation of the fear every common man has, that they might be just too common for doctors to go out of the way, even if they are dying.

In the infamous Anupama death case, PGI submitted a 117-page medical record before the consumer court. However, neither the PGI nor the CTU have filed replies to the petition filed in the case. The court has directed the PGI and CTU to file a reply by October 30th.

Family members of Anupama, who died at 17 after an accident while boarding a CTU bus, have sought 85 lakh Rs as compensation. The resident of Mauli Jagran Complex was rushed to the PGI after her leg was crushed under the rear tyre of a CTU bus while she was on her way back home from school. She succumbed to her injuries on 25 July. It has been alleged that delay in surgery led to gangrene.

- In the U.S., new housing starts reach a four-year high, increasing by 15% in the month of September. This is the greatest jump in new residential projects since July 2008, reports Bloomberg. Some analysts see this as a sign of general economic and employment growth.

- In a joint venture, Vastgood Properties and Prudential Real Estate Investors buy a portfolio of seven shopping centers from Cedar Realty Trust (NYSE: CDR) for around $104 million. The properties, in Central and Eastern Pennsylvania, are mostly anchored by Giant Food Stores, says CoStar.
