Researchers partially automate CPU core design, aim to fast track new PC processor production

Tired of the year wait (or more) in between new silicon architecture offerings from Chipzilla and AMD? Well, if some Wolfpack researchers have anything to say about it, we'll measure that wait in months thanks to a new CPU core design tool that automates part of the process. Creating a new CPU core is, on a high level, a two step procedure. First, the architectural specification is created, which sets the core's dimensions and arranges its components. That requires some heavy intellectual lifting, and involves teams of engineers to complete. Previously, similar manpower was needed for the second step, where the architecture spec is translated into an implementation design that can be fabricated in a factory. No longer. The aforementioned NC State boffins have come up with a tool that allows engineers to input their architecture specification, and it generates an implementation design that's used to draw up manufacturing blueprints. The result? Considerable time and manpower savings in creating newly designed CPU cores, which means that all those leaked roadmaps we're so fond of could be in serious need of revision sometime soon.

issue of : ?whey? protein / supplement ? Going to the store tomorrow? HELP!?
I?ve been working from the last 5 months. I?ve seen a lot of progress, but at a very slow pace. I heard a lot about going with ?whey? to see my progress speeds up. I do not really know anything about this ?whey? means products with the exception of the fact (if I?m right, please correct me), which is available in three different forms ? concentrate, isolate, and hydrolyzed in which hydrolyzed the first good choice . I?m going to the store tomorrow and I need to know how can I find out whether the specific hydrolyzed whey product? and is that everything I would need? A single box of hydrolyzed whey? or would you recommend something else. Please tell me the exact name, if possible. I do not want to put people into the store, because 1) they want me perhaps an even more expensive product, the less effective 2) could you tell me incorrect information available sind.Ich know, I do not know much about whey, why I ?m asking here is on Y! whey is only one type of protein, it comes from milk and is a biproduct of the cheese. (This is where most of the whey protein from shakes come from, but it can be found in other foods) So for now already in the food u essen.U need about 1 gram of protein per kilogram of body weight daily to build muscle. Whether that comes straight from the food or food and protein shakes, it does not really matter. U can def build muscles without the shakes. But a whey protein is a fast digesting protein and its great after a workout to nehmen.Ich would only stick with ON 100% Whey, solid product. HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603DN

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603DN ($1,749 direct), geared toward businesses with massive printing needs, has the chops to churn out large numbers of pages at breakneck speed. Its sticker price is high, but its low running costs should make it an attractive investment for busy SMB and enterprise departments looking for a speedy, high-volume black-and-white printer.

The M603DN?s 62 page-per-minute (ppm) rated speed matches that of the HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603N ($1,499 direct, 4 stars) as the fastest of any printers we?ve reviewed. They both lived up to their blistering rated speeds, printing out our test suite in a near-record pace. A 275,000-page maximum monthly duty cycle (with a recommended monthly duty cycle of up to 20,000 pages), as well as substantial standard and optional paper capacity, pegs the M603 series for SMB or enterprise workgroups that print massive amounts of material.

The M603N measures 15.7 by 16.3 by 20 inches (HWD) and weighs 58 pounds. The front panel has a four-line monochrome LCD and some basic control buttons: Home, Help, Stop, and Back, plus a two-way rocker control with center button. To the right is a numeric keypad for entering PIN numbers for password-protected printing; below the panel is a port for a USB thumb drive.

The M603DN has a standard 600-sheet paper capacity, between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder, and has an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper built in. Additional paper-handling options are available to bring the paper capacity to a maximum of 3,600 sheets. Options include a 1,500-sheet input tray ($499 direct), a 500-sheet input tray ($299), a 400-sheet custom media cassette ($229 direct), a 75-sheet envelope feeder ($249), a 500-sheet stacker ($149), a 500-sheet stapler/stacker ($249), and a 500-sheet mailbox ($399).

The M603DN is the middle model of HP?s M603 series. The M603N lacks an automatic duplexer, while the M603xh ($2,399 direct) includes the duplexer while adding an additional 500-sheet paper tray plus an encrypted hard drive.

The M603N provides USB and Ethernet (including Gigabit), with optional WiFi. I tested it over an Ethernet connection with its driver installed on a PC running Windows Vista.

Printing Speed

I timed the M603DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at a blistering effective 14.5 pages per minute (ppm), a very good speed for its 62-page per minute rated speed that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos. (Our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.) That?s statistically tied with the M603N?s 14.3 ppm, and slightly faster than the 13.4 ppm that the Editors? Choice HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M601DN ($899 direct, 4 stars)?rated at 45 ppm?turned in. The OKI B730DN ($1,299 direct, 4 stars), rated at 55 pages per minute, tested a bit slower still, at 12 ppm.

Output Quality

The M603DN?s output quality is fine for typical business needs. Its text was slightly below par for a laser, which is still very good, suitable for anything short of demanding desktop publishing applications that require very small fonts. Graphics were of average quality, good enough for internal business use. In a couple of illustrations the printer had trouble in differentiating between similar shades of gray, so I?d want to double-check the graphics before distributing them, say, as part of a report. Photo quality was average, good enough to print out recognizable images from files or Web pages, which is about all you can expect from a mono laser.

Other Issues

The M603DN has a very low cost per page (1.2 cents), the same as the M603N. The OKI B730DN?s cost per page is 1.4 cents, while the M601DN?s running costs are 1.7 cents per page. You pay much more up front for the M603DN, but for offices with the massive printing volumes for which it is intended, the cost savings can mount quickly.

The M603DN is pricey for a mono laser, but it lives up to the adage, ?you get what you pay for.? In its case, that includes sizzling speed, ample standard and optional paper capacity, a prodigious monthly duty cycle, output quality good enough for standard business uses, automatic duplexing, password-protected printing, and a very low cost per page. If you don?t need the duplexer, the M603N will save you $250.

The LED-based OKI B730DN has the same claimed maximum duty cycle as, and even greater standard paper capacity than, the M603DN. Like the M603DN, it offers secure printing and comes with an automatic duplexer. Its speed, although impressive, is lower than the M603DN?s. Its output quality doesn?t quite match that of the M603DN, but it?s still fine for standard business uses. The OKI sells for $500 less than the M603DN, but has slightly higher running costs, based on manufacturers? current costs and yields. (You can save about $20 per 10,000 pages printing with the M603DN.) Although the OKI B730DN is a very worthy printer, I?d give a clear edge to the M603DN.

The Editors? Choice M601DN, geared toward offices with lesser printing demands than the M603 models (its maximum monthly duty cycle is 175,000 pages), is a tad slower than the M603DN, lacks password-protected printing, and has a slightly higher cost per page, but comes in at a much lower sticker price. It?s a better deal for smaller workgroups with heavy though not exceptional printing volume.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 600 Printer M603DN, which straddles the line between an SMB and an enterprise printer, ?has what it takes to churn out humongous quantities of black-and-white pages, and its low running cost promises cost savings in time if you can get over the rather steep sticker price. It?s the best choice for offices or workgroups with exceptionally large monochrome printing needs looking for a high-end printer, and earns an Editors? Choice in that capacity.

Regulation of telomerase in stem cells and cancer cells

ScienceDaily (June 27, 2012) ? Scientists at the Max Planck Institute of Immunobiology and Epigenetics in Freiburg have gained important insights for stem cell research which are also applicable to human tumours and could lead to the development of new treatments. As Rolf Kemler's research group discovered, a molecular link exists between the telomerase that determines the length of the telomeres and a signalling pathway known as the Wnt/?-signalling pathway.

Telomeres are the end caps of chromosomes that play a very important role in the stability of the genome. Telomeres in stem cells are long and become shorter during differentiation or with age, but lengthen again in tumour cells.

The Wnt/?-catenin signalling pathway controls numerous processes in embryonic development, such as the formation of the body axis and of organ primordia, and is particularly active in embryonic and adult stem cells. The ?-catenin protein plays a key role in this signalling pathway. The incorrect regulation or mutation of ?-catenin leads to the development of tumours.

Rolf Kemler's research group has now shown that ?-catenin regulates the telomerase gene directly, and has explained the molecular mechanism at work here. Embryonic stem cells with mutated ?-catenin generate more telomerase and have extended telomeres, while cells without ?-catenin have low levels of telomerase and have shortened telomeres.

This regulation mechanism can also be found in human cancer cells. These discoveries could lead to the development of a new approach to the treatment of human tumours.

Browsing internet sites without the hurdles

ScienceDaily (June 25, 2012) ? The majority of websites have major shortcomings. Unclean programming frequently causes excessive load times. Companies are only gradually recognizing the advantages of a barrier-free Internet. Fraunhofer researchers are crafting tools that can be used to monitor compliance with web standards.

For companies in Germany, web accessibility has never been a compelling issue until now -- this was also confirmed by a series of tests conducted in 2011 by the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT in Sankt Augustin. The scientists at the Web Compliance Center used their analysis tools to test the "web compliance" -- or adherence to international web standards -- among the Internet sites of German companies listed on the DAX. The outcome: 90 percent of the websites exhibited substantial flaws. For instance, important data could only be found after much effort, the websites took too long to load, or they were deficiently displayed on mobile devices. "'Web compliance' not only means optimizing websites so that they can be used by disabled and older persons," explains Dr. Carlos Velasco of the Web Compliance Center at FIT. "Search engines such as Google also have considerable problems with faulty sites. This may make the sites impossible to find or prevent them from ranking high in search requests. That is why this issue actually deserves a high priority."

Economic advantages through accessibility

An increasing number of companies have since realized that accessibility also comes with major economic advantages. Hewlett Packard Italia, Public-I Group and Polymedia, for example, are participating in the EU research project, "Inclusive Future-Internet Web Services (I2Web)." Coordinated by FIT, the project has a budget of EUR 2.7 million for a 2 and half years. The partners include the University of York (United Kingdom) and the University of Ljubljana (Slovenia), as well as the National Council for the Blind of Ireland and the Foundation for Assistive Technology (FAST). Participating companies offer Internet television, Video On Demand (VOD), online banking services and content management systems. These sites will soon be barrier-free.

Monitoring social networks for illegal activities

To enable site operators to monitor their sites efficiently, the FIT computer scientists had already developed the "imergo Web Compliance Suite" back in 2004. It is composed of a series of tools that can be integrated into content management systems. They review websites for adherence to certain rules, and these not only cover accessibility: for instance, one could monitor a social network such as Facebook for certain word groups that point to illegal activities. A company could also verify if the corporate design standards were being met on all their pages. "Typically, several content editors take care of large websites," says Velasco. "The suite tests whether the logo is located in the right spot on every page, for example."

The EU project "I2Web" launched in 2010 is a kind of progression from the "imergo Web Compliance Suite." The prototype contains, for instance, a development environment for an Expert Viewer. Not all accessibility guidelines can be checked automatically by a software program. For instance, photographs on a website should have a suitable alternative text. While a test tool can detect whether a text exists, it cannot determine if it also "suitably" describes what can be seen in the image. So the Expert Viewer offers a list of all relevant image texts that editors can review for the correctness of content. One important part of the EU project is conformity with interfaces, such as when customers wish to use Video On Demand or Internet TV on their televisions. "I2Web" ensures that the websites work seamlessly on all devices (if possible), and can be operated with complete accessibility.

Given the rapid pace of the Internet's evolution, the researchers at FIT will not soon run out of things to do: they will consistently have to adapt their tools to new browsers, the latest mobile devices and additional interfaces. But their work pays off: Open Text, a leading provider of content management systems, successfully markets the "imergo tools" as an additional option on its products.
