Excellent features: slow motion, 16:9 widescreen, instant battery level status, instant display of tape time remaining, 35X Optical zoom is much more than one could actually use plus 800x digital which you'll never use, takes still pictures while you record on SD card, auto light feature, lots of functions like white balance, auto image stabilization, you can take cool video like sepia, 8MM type, etc;
I've only used it for home video like b-day's, family dinners, baby showers, etc. It's given me excellent video, looks great on my HD tv.. thought it's not HD video but good enough.. plus i'm not sure if i wanna see my family in HD that close up!
Of course it doesn't look so good in low light, but that's expected of any camcorder in this price range.. BTW did I mention the battery will outlast the 60 min tape!
All in all.. I would recommend this over any Canon or Sony MiniDV Standard Definition camcorders! Hands down it is the best bang for you buck!

Skaters gliding along Ottawa?s Rideau Canal skateway may find themselves coming to a halt to take in some spectacular nature photos this week.

The National Capital Commission is displaying the top photos from its Eco Art photo contest ? an annual competition that solicits pictures from Canadian photographers ranging in age from 14 to 24 ? on the skateway at the Dow?s Lake gallery.

The images feature Canadian wildlife, stunning coastlines and macro looks into the natural world, but the competition?s jury selected a serene, green forest scene captured by Ottawa?s Vineeth Sampathkumar, 19, as the winner.

?It was so green ? the towering trees nearly covered up any skylight from entering,? Sampathkumar said of his picture, which won him $1,800.?

As soon as we entered the area, I knew I had to stop and take a few shots ? something as beautiful as this should never be forgotten.?

The jury likely enjoyed the wonderful patten in Sampathkumar?s image. Two dark trees frame the edges of the photo, almost like curtains on a stage, while the vertical tree trunks create alternating light and dark vertical lines in the middle of the picture.

Afghan Taliban deny Mullah Omar wrote to White House (Reuters)

KABUL (Reuters) ? The Afghan Taliban denied on Saturday that the group's leader Mullah Omar wrote to the White House last year.

The White House received a letter in 2011 which purported to come directly from Mullah Omar, asking the United States to deliver prisoners whose transfer is now central to American efforts to broker peace in Afghanistan, an Obama administration official said Friday.

"Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan rejects this baseless rumor with the strongest of words," a statement on the Islamist group's website said, using the name by which the Taliban often calls itself.

The letter, intended for President Barack Obama, reportedly expressed impatience that the White House had not transferred five former senior Taliban officials out of Guantanamo Bay military prison.

The White House itself was "skeptical" the letter was actually from Mullah Omar, the official said, though others within the administration believed it was authentic.

"Hoping for surrender from the Afghan people is an unrealistic wish and a goal which could not be achieved by America in the past ten years," said Saturday's statement, attributed to Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid.

The Taliban last month said it would open a political office in Qatar, suggesting the group may be willing to engage in negotiations.

After more than a decade of war, Washington and its allies are announcing plans to steadily withdraw their troops amid doubts about the ability of the Afghan government and its nascent security forces to confront ongoing violence.

This week, U.S. Defense Secretary surprised Kabul by suggesting the American combat mission could end in 2013, well ahead of the end-2014 deadline agree with Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the exit of foreign combat troops.

"The U.S. is committed to the Lisbon timetable, which means that combat operations by international and Afghan forces are fully resourced and capable as necessary until the end of 2014 and beyond," U.S. ambassador to Afghanistan Ryan Crocker said in a statement Saturday.

"This is not a change in policy or strategy but recognition of the progress we all agreed to achieve in Lisbon."

Iran reports launch of small satellite into orbit

Iran successfully launched a new small satellite into orbit early Friday, state media reported, the latest in the country's ambitious space program that has raised concerns because of its possible military applications.

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad called in to the launch site, saying he was "hopeful this act will send a signal of more friendship among all human beings," the state IRNA news agency reported.

IRNA said the domestically manufactured satellite, Navid, or Gospel, was designed to collect data on weather conditions and monitor for natural disasters.

It said the satellite weighs about 110 pounds (50 kilograms) and would orbit Earth at an altitude of up to 234 miles (375 kilometers), circling the planet 15 times a day. It's a type of spacecraft known as a microsatellite, which is cheaper to produce and allows for less costly launch vehicles.

Navid, produced at an Iranian engineering university, is the third small satellite that Iran launched over the past years and is expected to remain in orbit for about two months. The two earlier satellites ? Omid, launched in 2009, and Rasad, sent into orbit in June 2011 ? lasted three weeks and 82 days, respectively. IRNA said Navid has advanced control technology, a higher-resolution camera and photocells to generate power.

The satellite was sent into orbit by a launch vehicle dubbed Safir, or Ambassador in Farsi, which IRNA described as having 20 percent more launch power compared with earlier versions of satellite launch vehicles.

An Iranian website, Irannuc.ir, claimed that Safir could be converted into an intercontinental ballistic missile. State TV showed footage of the launch, with a rocket sent off and turning into a light point in the darkness of the skies.

Iran's decade-old space program has raised alarms in the West, because the same technology that allows missiles to launch satellites can be used to fire warheads.

Israel, the U.S. and others charge that Iran is trying to develop nuclear weapons, a charge Tehran denies, insisting that its nuclear enrichment program is geared only for peaceful purposes, such as energy production.

Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi and the country's minister of science and technology, Kamran Daneshjoo, were present at the launch, IRNA said. There was no independent confirmation or details about where the launch took place.

Iran has made a series of claims in recent years about advances in its space program, which have not been verified by others. In 2010, Tehran announced it had successfully launched a rocket carrying a mouse, turtle and worms into space.

Also, Iran has set a goal of putting a man in orbit within 10 years, despite the expense and technological challenges involved.

The authorities are intent on showcasing the nation's technological successes as signs Iran can advance despite the West's sanctions over its controversial nuclear program. Iran is also pressing ahead with its military missile program, frequently testing missiles that would be capable of reaching Israel, U.S. bases in the Gulf and parts of southeast Europe.

NFL's ratings, revenue, popularity grow and grow (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Less than a year ago, Tom Brady, Logan Mankins, Osi Umenyiora and seven other players filed an antitrust suit against the NFL, a key moment in a convoluted and contentious labor dispute between the union and league that threatened to cut short ? or even wipe out ? the 2011 season.

On Sunday, Brady and Mankins of the New England Patriots and Umenyiora of the New York Giants will play in a Super Bowl that might very well draw more viewers than any TV show in history.

What lockout? What recession?

Nothing, it seems, can get in the way of the NFL, whose ratings and revenues climb and climb, no matter what. Indeed, some say both those issues managed to push even more attention and money the league's way.

Put simply, the NFL has the Midas Touch.

"The uncertainty of the lockout ? `Will it be settled? When will the deal come? Will it happen?' ? created a sense of anticipation for the new season. It fed into the public's awareness of the NFL. Even the concussion stories helped, because the public has become aware of the issue and is watching games to see how the rules are enforced, to see how the game changes," said Neal Pilson, a former president of CBS Sports who now runs a media consulting firm.

"They talk about it Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, and they watch it on Sunday," Pilson said. "The more separate issues related to the NFL that become part of the public discourse feed into the audiences."

NFL games accounted for 23 of the 25 most-watched telecasts last fall, and a total of 37 games drew at least 20 million viewers each.

That, Pilson says, is at least in part a result of the country's financial state. After all, what's cheaper than plopping down on the couch to watch a game?

"Sports is, to a certain extent, recession-proof. You can see a sports event 10 different ways: on television, on your laptop, on your iPad, on your mobile phone, in bars and restaurants, in airports. There's no other entertainment property that is so ubiquitous," Pilson said. "When the economy went south, guess what? Americans stayed home, made a single investment in hi-definition television and watched sports. And what they watch more than anything is the NFL."

The last two Super Bowls were the two most-viewed programs in U.S. television history.

NBC Sports Group Chairman Mark Lazarus is eager to see how many people tune in for his network's broadcast of Sunday's championship game between the Patriots and Giants. It's a rematch of the 2008 Super Bowl, when Eli Manning led New York to an upset that ruined New England's bid for a perfect season.

"We're optimistic this has a chance to be the largest TV audience ever," Lazarus said. "This is a great rivalry game, with two of the most prolific franchises. They come with big markets. And they're both Eastern markets."

Lazarus noted that a Super Bowl provides "a great platform for immediate revenue" ? to the tune of an average price of $3.5 million per 30-second commercial ? and for "showcasing the network."

The NFL knows that, of course, and pulls in big bucks from broadcasters, on top of the money collected from deals with partners such as Nike and Pepsi, along with ticket sales, merchandise and local sponsorships.

NBC, CBS and Fox recently renewed their NFL contracts through the 2022 season, with annual bumps in rights fees that will bring the total revenue generated by those deals from nearly $2 billion per year to more than $3 billion. In September, ESPN kept "Monday Night Football" through the 2021 season, increasing its annual payments from $1.1 billion to $1.9 billion.

"In a society where we are busier and busier every day and every year, having appointment television, with everyone knowing what time they get to see the product, is something the NFL has done and nobody else has. Other sports still ... are on at different times," said David Schwab, who specializes in matching brands with celebrities as managing director at Octagon First Call.

"From September to January, every Sunday, that's when football comes. That's a huge advantage," Schwab said. "Every Sunday at 1 o'clock, 4 o'clock and 8 o'clock have become what NBC Thursday nights used to be: `Must See TV.'"

There's really no competition at all from other leagues.

The most recent edition of The Harris Poll, released last week, asked about 2,200 adults who follow at least one sport what their favorite is, and 36 percent chose professional football. Next up were baseball and college football ? at 13 percent apiece.

That gap represents quite a jump from only a year earlier, when pro football topped baseball 31-17. So much for the notion that the "millionaires vs. billionaires" showdown over more than $9 billion in annual revenues would turn off fans.

"It's absolutely No. 1 in sports," Schwab said. "First of all, they put on the best quality product in live entertainment in this country. And the fan base is incredibly large and passionate. With passion comes support and tickets and merchandise and concessions. And that gets the eyeballs of brands and advertisers. So it's a cycle."

Certainly doesn't hurt to have the sort of stability in leadership the NFL has enjoyed.

The league announced last week that owners voted to extend Commissioner Roger Goodell's contract to March 2019. As it is, the NFL's had only two other commissioners since 1960.

"The other thing they've done quite brilliantly is they've made it a 12-month business. The NFL is in the public consciousness 12 months of the year, whether you're going through the season, then off into draft preparation, the combine, the draft, (free agency in) the summer," NBC's Lazarus said. "There really is no offseason, for the how fan looks at it."

Pilson offered another reason for the NFL's always-rising fortunes: gambling, including fantasy football.

"They feed the meter," he said. "They create interest in not just the outcome, but also the process. Gambling isn't just who wins and loses; it's the over-under, the third-quarter score."

Giants owner John Mara, meanwhile, offered a simple, on-the-field explanation for the sport's success.

"Look at how compelling the games are, week in and week out," Mara said. "That's why we're where we are today."

So soon after a potentially disastrous work stoppage, its first since 1987, the NFL is back in business and bigger than ever.

There's the new collective bargaining agreement that was signed in August, assuring labor peace for a decade.

Brady et al vs. National Football League et al is a distant memory. All anyone cares about at the moment is Brady et al vs. Manning et al.

"If we missed any games, it could have taken years, maybe a decade, to get the fans' respect back. People are hurting today," Patriots owner Robert Kraft said. "They want good stories."

Leave it to the NFL to deliver.

New Anti-Clotting Drug May Cut Brain Bleeding Risk: Study (HealthDay)

THURSDAY, Feb. 2 (HealthDay News) -- A new medication that helps prevent strokes in people with the abnormal heart rhythm disorder known as atrial fibrillation poses less risk of bleeding in the brain than a commonly used drug, research comparing rivaroxaban (Xarelto) and warfarin suggests.

Anti-clotting medications, also called blood-thinners or anticoagulants, include warfarin (Coumadin) and aspirin, among others. In patients with atrial fibrillation, these drugs can reduce the risk of ischemic stroke, which occurs when a vessel becomes clogged by a blood clot. But the drugs can also cause excessive bleeding because they make it harder for blood to clot.

In a new study, researchers led by Dr. Graeme Hankey, a neurologist at the Royal Perth Hospital and University of Western Australia, followed more than 14,000 people who took anti-clotting drugs for a median of two years. Of those patients, 136 had bleeding in the brain.

People who took a new anticoagulant called rivaroxaban (Xarelto) -- and suffered from the most common type of atrial fibrillation and didn't have heart valve damage -- were about one-third less likely to experience bleeding in the brain than those who took warfarin, the investigators found.

So which drug is best?

In the big picture, "all of the newer [blood-thinning] drugs are reported to have lower intracranial bleeding risks than Coumadin [warfarin] when used in the setting of atrial fibrillation to prevent stroke," said Dr. Ken Uchino, program director of the Vascular Neurology Fellowship at the Cleveland Clinic's Cerebrovascular Center, who was not involved with the study but is familiar with the findings.

"This is one advantage, but in absolute terms it is small -- on average going from 0.7 percent per year of intracranial bleeding risks to 0.5 percent per year for rivaroxaban -- though this is a 33 percent decrease for rivaroxaban," Uchino explained.

The new drugs are more convenient than warfarin, which requires the administration of blood tests to make sure patients are getting the proper doses. But "there have been concerns about unanticipated risks and how the new medications are all short-acting -- what happens if one misses doses? -- and cleared by the kidneys -- what happens if the kidneys start to fail without anyone knowing?" Uchino said.

Also, the newer anti-clotting drugs are expensive.

The study, which was funded by Johnson & Johnson and Bayer HealthCare, was slated for presentation Thursday at the American Stroke Association's International Stroke Conference, in New Orleans.

Because this study was presented at a medical meeting, the data and conclusions should be viewed as preliminary until published in a peer-reviewed journal.
