Obama begins Martha's Vineyard vacation

EDGARTOWN, Mass. (AP) ? President Barack Obama opened the first summer vacation of his second term Saturday on Martha's Vineyard, trading Washington debates over the budget, government surveillance and his health care overhaul for a hoped-for carefree week filled with golf, beach outings and hanging-out time with family and friends.

Obama arrived on the coastal Massachusetts island after addressing the Disabled American Veterans national convention in Orlando, Fla.

As he flew north on Air Force One, Obama got into a vacation mindset by trading his suit and tie for khakis and a blue shirt with rolled-up sleeves. First lady Michelle Obama, who introduced him at the convention, kept her yellow-and-white sundress but switched from high heels to flats.

Daughters Malia and Sasha were reuniting with their parents later on. Family dog Bo traveled with the president.

People lined both sides of the two-lane road Obama's motorcade traveled from Edgartown, where he arrived by helicopter after landing in nearby Cape Cod, Mass., to the six-bedroom home he is renting in Chilmark. Many people waved and snapped photographs; a few held signs opposing the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline that would run from Canada to the Gulf Coast if approved by the Obama administration.

Unlike his past vacations here as president, some residents are upset over this visit. The Secret Service, which provides Obama's security, is banning vehicular traffic from part of a public road near Obama's rental home. Such a closure is a first for presidential vacations here.

Although Obama planned no official public appearances during his nine-day stay, his motorcade will be seen whisking him from golf courses to beaches to restaurants. He is due back in Washington a week from Sunday.

Since a president is never truly on vacation, Obama will receive regular briefings on national security and domestic issues, said White House press secretary Jay Carney. National security adviser Susan Rice and Rob Nabors, a deputy chief of staff, are among the White House aides on vacation duty.

Beyond that, Obama will play golf, hit the beach, dine out, relax with his family, visit with friends and read more than just White House briefing books.

"I know he's looking forward very much to some down time with his family," Carney said Saturday. "I'm sure he'll see some friends."

Obama vacationed on Martha's Vineyard before he became president and after, in 2009, 2010 and 2011.

But Obama, who is a millionaire thanks to sales of his best-selling books, skipped the island during last year's presidential campaign, probably to avoid perceptions of elitism as he was casting himself as a champion of the middle class in the heated campaign against Republican Mitt Romney, who is a millionaire many times over. Public perception, however, is less important for politicians like Obama who won't face voters again.

The Obamas are again staying in Chilmark, an area on the island's western tip that is dotted with expansive, multimillion-dollar homes. Actors Ted Danson and his wife, Mary Steenburgen, singer Carly Simon and Washington power broker Vernon Jordan are among its famous residents.

The president and his family were forced into new vacation digs after the 28-acre Blue Heron Farm, the secluded Chilmark property they rented from 2009-2011, was sold. The new place is closer to public roads, which led the Secret Service to ban vehicular traffic nearby.

"My response to this is we've had the president come to our town three times and it's been very cordial and there's been very little disruption and we love to have him," said Chilmark Selectman Warren Doty, according to a report on the website of the Vineyard Gazette. "This would change that approach ... and be very disruptive."

The town also emailed residents, saying "anyone aggrieved by this closing should email or call the White House."

Doty did not return a telephone message left at his office by The Associated Press.

Secret Service spokesman Ed Donovan said the agency works closely with state and local law enforcement agencies to have as little impact as possible on traffic and to keep necessary street closures brief.

Obama's new vacation home ? the main house has four bedrooms and a guesthouse has two more ? is owned by David Schulte, a Chicago-based corporate restructuring specialist and friend of the president. Schulte donated $2,000 to Obama's re-election campaign, according to the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics.

Schulte confirmed the rental in an email to the AP. A local real estate agent handled the transaction.

The 5,000-square-foot, contemporary-style home sits on 9 1/2 acres overlooking Chilmark Pond and the Atlantic Ocean, according to the Vineyard Gazette. The private master suite has a den, porch, outdoor shower, his and her bathrooms and access to a gym. An open floor plan provides views of the ocean and pond from the living and dining rooms and the kitchen. The home also has a small basketball court, the newspaper reported.

During Saturday's trip, two MV-22 Ospreys were used for the first time in support of a presidential flight aboard Marine One. They carried White House staff, media and Secret Service. The tilt-rotor aircraft, which takes off and lands like a helicopter but has wings for level flight, is replacing the Vietnam-era CH-46 helicopters used during presidential trips.

New 60,000 Star Online Data Set May Help Reveal Formation of Milky Way Galaxy

This map shows an infrared view of the Milky Way, as seen from Earth, plus the infrared spectra of two stars. Green circles show locations where infrared spectroscopy data were obtained during the first year of Sloan Digital Sky Survey-III observations with the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The white boxes show the infrared spectra of two stars as seen by APOGEE; the red lines show where these stars live in the galaxy. One of these stars is in the galactic bulge, which is rich in elements heavier than hydrogen, and one is further out in the galactic disk, which has fewer such heavy elements. Image: Peter Frinchaboy (Texas Christian University), Ricardo Schiavon (Liverpool John Moores University), and the SDSS-III collaboration. Infrared sky image from 2MASS, IPAC/Caltech and University of Massachusetts.

"This data set is unprecedented for investigating the history and structure of our galaxy, as well as nearby low-mass stars," said Penn State assistant professor of astronomy and astrophysics Suvrath Mahadevan, one of the SDSS-III scientists.

The highlight is a new set of high-resolution measurements of the amount of infrared light given off by each star at each wavelength. The scientists used infrared light, which is invisible to human eyes, because this light is able to penetrate the veil of dust that obscures the center of the galaxy. This light-blocking barrier limited the ability of previous studies to consistently reveal information about the stars in the Milky Way that were hidden behind the dust.

The new infrared detections are made possible by a new SDSS-III instrument that is part of an effort to create a comprehensive census of our Milky Way galaxy -- the SDSS-III's Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). The new spectra are the first data to be released by the APOGEE project. "The APOGEE instrument was designed for observing the infrared light from these hidden stars in our Galaxy," Mahadevan said. "This innovative instrument can obtain spectra of 300 stars in a single observation. Our goal is to obtain detailed information on approximately 100,000 stars during the three-year span of the APOGEE survey."

The question of how our Milky Way galaxy formed has been the subject of scientific speculation and debate for centuries. APOGEE's three-dimensional map will provide key information for resolving central questions about how our galaxy formed over the many billions of years of its history. The key is learning the compositions and motions of stars in each region of the galaxy. Mahadevan has led efforts to characterize low-mass stars and binary stars found during the APOGEE experiment.

The SDSS-III team also is publishing another 685,000 spectra from galaxies and quasars whose light began traveling toward Earth when our universe was much younger, just as the mysterious force of "dark energy" was beginning to influence the universe's expansion. These observations come from the SDSS-III Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS). "The BOSS project is producing superb data that allow numerous investigations ranging from the large scale evolutionary history of the universe to the properties of supermassive black holes, which have the size of the solar system," said distinguished professor of astronomy and astrophysics Niel Brandt, another Penn State scientist involved with SDSS-III.

Donald Schneider, distinguished professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State, is the survey coordinator and scientific publication coordinator for SDSS-III. Public access to SDSS data always has been a key goal of the project. All data are available, to researchers and the public, at http://www.sdss3.org/dr10 . Beach Energy's FY14 Capex Projected to Reach $440M

Beach Energy Limited provided the following guidance range in relation to the financial year 2014 (FY14) beginning July 1:

  • Production ? 8.7 to 9.3 million barrels of oil equivalent
  • Capital expenditure?? $385 to $440 million (AUD 420 to AUD 480 million)

The above guidance has resulted from the annual strategy and budget review process, which takes into consideration business objectives, operating performance, key strategies and more macro factors such as industry conditions.

Production

FY14 oil and gas production is expected to increase, primarily as a result of:

  • Continued exploration, appraisal and development success, with increased volumes expected to be transported through the new Western Flank oil flowline network to Moomba
  • Full year production from Beach operated gas and gas liquids from PEL 106B (Beach 50 percent and operator, Drillsearch Energy Ltd 50 percent)
  • Increased conventional gas production from the South Australian Cooper Basin Joint Venture, or?SACB JV, (Beach/Delhi 20.21 percent, Santos Ltd 66.6 percent and operator, Origin Energy Ltd 13.19 percent) as a result of infill development drilling and
  • Increased oil production from Abu Sennan (Beach 22 percent, Kuwait Energy Egypt Ltd 50 percent and operator, Dover Investments Ltd 28 percent, Egypt

Capital Expenditure

The guidance range for FY14 capital expenditure allows for discretionary expenditure as deemed appropriate and the potential impact of weather and other delays. The range does not account for potential acquisitions, divestments or farm downs. The breakdown of the $385-$440 million (AUD 420-AUD 480 million) between development and exploration is expected to be as follows:

  • Development expenditure of $225-$257 million (AUD 245-AUD 280 million)
    • Cooper Basin, non-SACB JV ? $55-$60 million (AUD 60-AUD 65 million)
    • Cooper Basin SACB JV and SWQ JVs ? $160-$183 million (AUD 175-AUD 200 million)
    • International ? $9-$14 million (AUD 10-AUD 15 million)
  • Exploration expenditure of $160-$183 million (AUD 175-AUD 200 million)
    • Cooper Basin, non-SACB JV ? $41-$46 (AUD 45-AUD 50 million)
    • Cooper Basin SACB JV and SWQ JVs ? $4.6 million (AUD 5 million)
    • International ? $28-$32 million (AUD 30-AUD 35 million)
    • Unconventional ? $83-$92 million (AUD 90-AUD 100 million)
    • Other ? $4.6-$9 million (AUD 5-AUD 10 million)

As a result of an expected improvement in operating cash flow, and in conjunction with a cash balance June 30 of $319 million (AUD 348 million) and a secured $138 million (AUD 150 million) multi-option facility, Beach anticipates it will be able to fund its FY14 capital expenditure activities in full.

Mayor believes stadium is good investment

Topics:? debt, mackay regional council, money, nrl, virgin australia stadium

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.
Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the stadium is a great asset.

RATEPAYERS have paid off more than $600,000 of debt, which was left in the hands of the Mackay Regional Council after it took over operations of the Virgin Australia Stadium.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said it wasn't "pleasant" to have to tell the community the extent of the $635,000 bill, which includes paying off outstanding power bills, wages and the cost of hosting NRL matches.

But she is confident the $11.3?million stadium is a solid investment for the community.

The public was invited to attend yesterday morning's press conference, and councillors showed a united front, with many of them watching the mayor address the media pack. Council is in the process of developing a business plan to manage the cost of the stadium, she said.

"The key is ... that we will develop a business plan, so we can ensure for our community that we can run this as effectively, and cost effectively as we can," Cr Comerford said.

The current Virgin Australia Stadium manager, Julie Anderson, will finish up in early September, and a senior officer at the MECC will take charge. At the moment there is a $200,000 line in the council budget allocated to fund the running of the stadium.

The Bulldogs versus Knights NRL match, which was played only a month after council was in control of the stadium, ran at an $185,000 loss.

But $450,000 of debts were left to council, when they took over operations.

"There were power bills outstanding for about $70,000 and it was also down to maintenance and cleaning bills, fire alarm maintenance ... top dressing the field," she said.

"So those figures are real bills owed to real businesses in Mackay. And one can say ... council was doing the right thing by many local businesses in our community."

Reader poll

Do you believe the stadium is a good investment?

POSSIBILITY OF NO MORE NRL GAMES

THE stadium won't host another NRL game if councillors know it will run at a loss.

That's the opinion of Mayor Deirdre Comerford.

She said they would have to know if events like that would, at the least, "break even", to get a green light by councillors.

Bulldogs? Ben Barba evades a tackle from Knights? Jarrod Mullen during the NRL match held at Virgin Australia Stadium last month.
Bulldogs? Ben Barba evades a tackle from Knights? Jarrod Mullen during the NRL match held at Virgin Australia Stadium last month. Peter Holt

"But it is clear to say, we can still see the value of having an NRL match, for a variety of reasons," she said.

Cr Comerford has been in meetings with NRL officials to discuss the stadium's best bet at hosting an event.

The previous match was a huge learning curve, and things would change if another game of that scale was to be held at the stadium.

"There are better ways to do things for the future," she said.

However, the Virgin Australia Stadium has key events coming up.

Mackay District Rugby League has secured a deal to host their grand final match later this year.

And on September 21 the stadium will be filled with big hats and boots when the Professional Bull Riders (PBR) bring their show to Mackay.

Cr Comerford said, if the opportunity to host another musical spectacular, like March's KISS concert, came about, council would absolutely look into it.

?

CUTTERS HOPE TO STAY

THE Mackay Cutters have called the Virgin Australia Stadium home for two years, and executive officer Glenn Ottaway hopes it will stay that way.

Mayor Deirdre Comerford said the agreement allowing the Cutters to stay on board at the stadium would be looked at in council's development plan.

"Certainly they are currently tenants at the stadium and they will be part of the business plan going forward, so they will need to pay their way," she said.

Mr Ottaway said increased cost on the Cutters would be a huge burden on the club.

"We are a not-for-profit organisation, everything we earn is from the support of sponsors and the community, but 100% of what we make goes back into the club," he said.

Cr Comerford said the Cutters were unique, in comparison to other clubs, as they didn't have a leagues club with poker machines pooling in money for them.

Mr Ottaway said Cutters and council officials had been meeting regularly, even daily, to discuss operations at the stadium. He said he was promised by council they would ride out the rest of the season, and was confident they could make an agreement with council.

Android 4.3 update for Nexus 10 and 4 removes unofficial OpenCL drivers

We had previously reported that Android 4.2 firmwares for Nexus 10 and Nexus 4 were found to contain OpenCL drivers. The drivers were an internal implementation detail and not officially supported for use by developers, and we had mentioned that the drivers may be removed in future updates. Android 4.3 is now rolling out to these devices and OpenCL drivers are no longer present in the new update.

OpenCL is an API for parallel and heterogeneous computing defined by Khronos, the same group that also stewards OpenGL. On the desktop and server side, AMD, Intel and Nvidia (and some others, such as Altera) support OpenCL on Windows and Linux. Apple in particular heavily pushes OpenCL on OSX and is providing drivers for latest version of OpenCL (1.2) in OSX Mavericks for all shipping Macs. Mobile hardware vendors including Qualcomm, ARM and Imagination Technologies tout OpenCL readiness for their hardware, but without shipping drivers on commercial devices, it is not possible to use OpenCL. Google is pushing their own proprietary solution called Renderscript on Android.

At a very high level, Renderscript is to OpenCL as Java is to C+Assembly. Renderscript is meant to be portable to any Android device irrespective of underlying hardware and does not expose lower level details of the hardware to the programmer. For example, Renderscript does not allow the programmer to choose whether a particular piece of code should run on the CPU, GPU or DSP etc. Such decisions are taken automatically by the Renderscript driver provided on the Android device. Renderscript's approach promotes portability and ease of use but there maybe a (potentially large) performance cost compared to well-optimized code in a lower-level language. Renderscript Compute has some other shortcomings such as lack of interoperability with graphics and lack of support in the Android NDK. The lack of programmer control,? associated potential performance costs and other limitations make it unsuitable for some applications such as high performance game engines. Renderscript should be fine for some applications such as some of the simpler image processing filter applications and indeed Google is promoting Filterscript, a subset of Renderscript, which particularly targets image processing type applications.

OpenCL and Renderscript are largely complementary. OpenCL exposes more of the details of the hardware and can be a powerful tool in the hands of experienced programmers, but more power requires more responsibility on the part of the programmer. For example, OpenCL allows one to get really close to the hardware and it is possible to obtain close to peak performance if the programmer invests the effort in optimizing for the platform. However, code that is heavily optimized for one vendor's hardware may perform poorly on hardware from other vendors. Experienced developers typically therefore write multiple code versions with each optimized for different architectures, and provide a fallback code for platforms they do not know well.

According to some unofficial comments from Google engineers, which I will clarify is not an official statement, Google's concern is that inexperienced developers may not use OpenCL's power properly. For example, developers may test and optimize code for only one hardware, and may not realize that the code performs poorly on others. Given the diversity of hardware in the Android world, Google is preferring Renderscript over OpenCL. I think Google would prefer consistent performance everywhere, even if it means not reaching the peak on any platform.?

My understanding is that the drivers were removed at Google's request, to promote Renderscript over OpenCL, though that is speculation and not an official word. It is a little unfortunate that Google appears uninterested in even providing OpenCL as an option, at least on Nexus devices where it (presumably) controls the firmware and the drivers shipped with the firmware.

It remains to be seen whether Google will provide access to any low-level heterogeneous computing API in Android in the standard SDKs. I also wonder how Google will react to NVIDIA's quest to bring technologies like CUDA to the Android world given that Google appears to be entirely uninterested in allowing any parallel compute API except Renderscript. It is perfectly possible that device makers will ship OpenCL or alternate low-level solutions (like CUDA) as a differentiating factor on non-Nexus devices as hardware vendors often provide additional SDKs specific to their devices.

Renderscript joins the ranks of existing parallel and heterogeneous computing technologies such as CUDA, OpenCL, C++ AMP, DirectCompute, OpenGL compute shaders, OpenACC and OpenMP 4.0 as yet another option for heterogeneous computing. Ultimately, each of the APIs has its own strengths and weaknesses. And much like other technical domains, such as programming languages, browser standards and graphics APIs, various parallel computing APIs are being driven by a mix of technical and business interests. Ultimately, there will be a consolidation but it is difficult currently to guess which APIs will remain in end. We will continue to watch how this space evolves.

Long Island Orthopedic Surgeon Provides Quality Pain ...

People who are dealing with various forms of foot pain and discomfort are often unable to lead a productive and balanced lifestyle. Many people discover that their aches and pains reach levels that are far too severe to be overcome without receiving medical guidance. Consumers facing this concern should know how a Long Island orthopedic surgeon is able to offer effective guidance.

An orthopedic surgeon is the doctor trained in performing the procedures often required to address concerns in the foot. Consumers are interested in their guidance when their particular aches and pains have reached levels that are much too severe to manage individually. The pain management solutions are quite viable for consumers to consider when offered.

Consumers in Long Island who are dealing with this kind of concern have plenty of options to weigh in. Pain sufferers are generally unclear about what is offered from this doctor which is often why they are avoided. Keeping several factors in mind is quite helpful in managing this process accordingly.

Patients are initially offered the surgical procedures necessary to address any issues present in the foot. There are many complications that are only equipped to be resolved through surgery which is generally why this process is carefully focused on. Doctors guide their patients through each phase of the process needed.

Braces and special shoes are made available to anyone in need. The use of specialty shoes and devices is quite common when attempting to work through any risks associated with this part of the body. Professionals tailor these solutions to the needs of each patient.

A Long Island orthopedic surgeon provides guidance on daily habits that help prevent pain from being an issue. Daily activities that include the foot are generally reviewed to determine which ones could be creating the most pain. Patients are then guided on how to use their foot without having to experiencing discomfort.

Everywhere you turn, New York Yankees star Alex Rodriguez is being talked about.

His alleged connection with Biogenesis, a Florida lab that made performance-enhancing drugs, has made A-Rod a topic of conversation on the morning TV and radio talk shows as well as regular news and sports news programs.

Word on how long MLB will suspend Rodriguez is supposed to come down at any moment, which has added to the intense news coverage on the Yankee.

But one fan, SILive.com user, aschiavo611, has had enough of seeing and hearing about A-Rod in the news and his remarks are Thursday's "Sports Comment of the Day."

aschiavo611 said:

"Between ARod and (mayoral candidate Anthony) Weiner, you'd think there were two people living in NYC instead of 8.3 million."

Do you agree with aschiavo611's assessment or do you think the news coverage on A-Rod is warranted? Sound off by leaving a comment below!

Family and friends speak to character of Daniel Jimenez-Acosta, the London man convicted of killing his wife

The family and friends of a London man convicted of murdering his wife hailed him as ?great father, husband and friend.?

A sentencing hearing for Daniel Jimenez-Acosta, 45, began Wednesday with testimony from four defense witnesses who defended his character.

In April a jury found Jimenez-Acosta guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his wife Patricia Pacheco-Hernandez, 41, whose battered body was found in the basement of their home in May 2011.

Evidence at the trial showed Pacheco-Hernandez was struck in the head 20 times with a lead-crystal vase, and police found Jimenez-Acosta standing over her body.

The crime carries an automatic life sentence but Superior Court Justice Andrew Goodman will consider submissions for parole eligibility -- anywhere from 10-25 years.

Nine of the jurors who found Jimenez-Acosta guilty recommended he stay in prison for 15 years, two jurors said 20 years and one advised 17 years.

Jimenez-Acosta, a tow-truck driver who had emigrated from Colombia, said his wife was killed by robbers who broke into the home.

But the court was told the marriage was in trouble and Pacheco-Hernandez wanted a divorce after having an affair with a man from Colombia.

Four defense witnesses said they only knew Jimenez-Acosta as a devoted husband and father of three children.

Javier Hoyos, a long-time friend, said Jimenez-Acosta and his wife were known for helping new Colombian immigrants settle in the city, meeting newcomers at the border and giving temporary lodging in their home. He said he was not aware of any strife in the home.

?He was always calm and peaceful. We used to bug him that it was Patricia who made all the decision in the home,? said Hoyos.

Fernando Jimenez, the older brother of Jimenez-Acosta, has cared for the couple's three children since the murder.

He said his brother and his wife ?had a beautiful relationship, they respected each other very much.?

Jimenez-Acosta's stepmother Beatriz Mendoza said he was completely devoted to his family.

?He was the best husband and father,? she said.

The sentencing hearing will resume on Friday with two more defense character witnesses.

Crown attorney Fraser Ball will also submit a victim impact statement from the sister of Pacheco-Hernandez.
