Mobile Device Speeds Up Diagnostic Testing for HIV and More ...

imageFast, Low-cost Device Uses the Cloud to Speed Up Diagnostic Testing for HIV and More

Mobile Device Can Easily Be Used in Remote Areas around the World

Samuel K. Sia, associate professor of biomedical engineering atColumbia Engineering, has taken his innovative?lab-on-a-chipand developed a way to not only check a patient?s HIV status anywhere in the world with just a finger prick, but also synchronize the results automatically and instantaneously with central health-care records?10 times faster, the researchers say, than the benchtop ELISA, a broadly used diagnostic technique. The device was field-tested in Rwanda by a collaborative team from the Sia lab and ICAP at Columbia?s Mailman School of Public Health.

In the?study?published online January 18, 2013, in?Clinical Chemistry, and in the print April 2013 issue, Sia describes a major advance towards providing people in remote areas of the world with laboratory-quality diagnostic services traditionally available only in centralized health care settings.

?We?ve built a handheld mobile device that can perform laboratory-quality HIV testing, and do it in just 15 minutes and on finger-pricked whole blood,? Sia says. ?And, unlike current HIV rapid tests, our device can pick up positive samples normally missed by lateral flow tests, and automatically synchronize the test results with patient health records across the globe using both the cell phone and satellite networks.?

Sia collaborated with Claros Diagnostics (a company he co-founded, now called OPKO Diagnostics) to develop a pioneering strategy for an integrated microfluidic-based diagnostic device?the mChip?that can perform complex laboratory assays, and do so with such simplicity that these tests can easily be carried out anywhere, including in resource-limited settings, at a very low cost. This new study builds upon his earlier scientific concepts and incorporates a number of new engineering elements that make the test automated to run with data communication over both cell phone and satellite networks.

?There are a set of core functions that such a mobile device has to deliver,? he says. ?These include fluid pumping, optical detection, and real-time synchronization of diagnostic results with patient records in the cloud. We?ve been able to engineer all these functions on a handheld mobile device and all powered by a battery.?

This new technology, which combines cell phone and satellite communication technologies with fluid miniaturization techniques for performing all essential ELISA functions, could lead to diagnosis and treatment for HIV-infected people who, because they cannot get to centralized health care centers, do not get tested or treated.

?This is an important step forward for us towards making a real impact on patients,? says Jessica Justman, MD, senior technical director at ICAP and associate clinical professor of medicine in epidemiology at the Mailman School of Public Health. ?And with the real-time data upload, policymakers and epidemiologists can also monitor disease prevalence across geographical regions more quickly and effectively.?

Cold snap torments those still without heat after Sandy

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Arctic air gripped parts of the United States on Thursday, making life miserable for people still without heat months after superstorm Sandy and turning steam from a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania into a snowfall substantial enough to shovel.

In Ely, Minnesota, the latest in a string of frigid days plunged the mercury to 29 below zero Fahrenheit (minus 34 Celsius), according to the National Weather Service. The stunningly low temperature, which came without factoring in wind chill, was recorded under calm skies near Minnesota's border with Canada, the weather service said.

In Brooklyn, New York, where about 200 homes slammed by Sandy in October remained without heat, "It's just getting colder and colder," said Doreen Greenwood-Garson, chief of the Gerritsen Beach Fire Department.

Nightly, the volunteer department has loaded its ambulance with donated space heaters and free hot meals and delivered them to shut-ins, said Greenwood-Garson, a real estate broker. Already it has given away a total of 60 space heaters and each night about 50 meals, she said.

In Long Beach on New York's Long Island, the Martin Luther King Center, a community gathering spot, ran out of donated space heaters, said James Hodge, a city employee who is coordinating relief efforts there and is without heat in his own home.

"I even gave out my own personal heaters that I was sleeping with," Hodge said.

He and his two brothers have been sleeping in several layers of clothes under piles of blankets near pots of hot water, their breath still visible in the cold of their home.

The center has been hosting more than 100 people during the day who needed a warm place to stay for a few hours, particularly school-children, who are being provided hot food, Hodge said.

Hodge said he was concerned that some people still suffering from the storm's damage may be increasingly reluctant to seek help as time went on.

"Do I ask three months later for a sweater?" he said. "Do I ask for some food three months later when everyone thinks I'm fine, when I should be back on my feet? I think some people suffer from not asking because they're worried about who's going to question them."

New York City is making free emergency repairs to thousands of Sandy-damaged homes under its newly created Rapid Repairs program, which supplies furnaces, water heaters and other materials and pays contractors to make repairs at no cost to residents and landlords.

As of Wednesday, the program had restored heat, power or hot water to more than 12,000 homes in 7,363 buildings, work was underway in another 1,870 buildings and repairs had yet to start in 2,620 buildings, a spokesman for the program said.

Temperatures were expected to rise a bit when a snowstorm was predicted for Friday to blanket Midwestern and Atlantic coastal states, according to meteorologist Alex Sosnowski of Accuweather.com.

In Pennsylvania, some residents already have been shoveling, after steam from cooling stacks of a nuclear power plant in Shippingport, 30 miles northwest of Pittsburgh near the Ohio border, met the cold snap on Tuesday.

As a result, snow fell over area homes for about six hours, said Fred McMullen, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. Ground-level cold air met the stacks' warm moist air, forming a cloud that produced snowflakes, he said.

"Don't eat glowing snow!" Philadelphia Daily News reporter David Murphy jokingly wrote on Twitter.

Accuweather.com noted the Shippingport snow was neither fluorescent nor radioactive.

The Tibetan spiritual leader addressed a crowd of about 4,000 in a conversation with his biographer Pico Iyer.?

Calling the 20th century a century of bloodshed and violence, the Dalai Lama urged that the ?21st century be a century of dialogue.? The title of his talk, "Kinships of Faiths: Finding the Middle Way," headlined his hopes for comity even in the potential divisive realm of religion.?

In his words, secularism is mostly misunderstood as being against religion. He said in India every religion is respected and our fore fathers framed the constitution of India by keeping space for every religion. "There are so many religions in India but the country is stable," he said.

The Delhi rape case came up, when a reporter asked his view on the Indians demanding capital punishment for the rapists.

"I have been noticing crimes in big cities like Bombay and Delhi? when these kinds of things happen people take it for granted. Now the time has come that we must make efforts for special protection to women, physically and men?s protection is education," said the Dalai Lama.?
The rape case trial opened yesterday. Before the trial opened Indians were debating whether the accused should be chemically castrated or even put to death if found guilty. The Dalai Lama expressed his dislike of capital punishment. ?Since many decades Amnesty International started a movement banning death sentence. I signed it. I do not like death penalty but it is up to the country's law to decide,? he told the reporters after his session.
He also asserted that the independent Tibet should be a secular and democratic country. The Dalai Lama spoke about the China-Tibet dispute, although conceding that he has now retired from his political role. He urged good relations between India and China are must as they are the ?most populous nations in the world? and put forth India as an example for China to learn to be democratic.
This year 285 speakers will be speaking during the five day schedule. Last year, around 120,000 people had attended the five day festival.?

What's an assault weapon, anyway? A gun glossary

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Even Americans who have never touched a gun are probably familiar with the looks and names of a few ? the military M16, the action-movie's Uzi, the historic Colt .45. The terms thrown around in the national debate over gun control can be harder to fathom.

What's a high-capacity magazine? Which guns are "military style"? Why would a person use an assault weapon?

A primer on some key terms in the debate over President Barack Obama's gun-control proposals:

___

SEMI-AUTOMATICS

There are all sorts of semi-automatics ? they can be pistols, rifles or shotguns ? and they're popular sellers. They fire a bullet each time the trigger is pulled, with no need to manually move the next round into the firing chamber. That means they can fire again as fast as a person can release and pull the trigger, so long as the gun's got more ammunition at the ready. Semi-automatic weapons are popular with hunters, sport shooters and gun enthusiasts.

The sale and manufacture of some semi-automatics deemed to be "assault weapons" was banned for a decade. That law expired in 2004.

The shooters used semi-automatic rifles in the Colorado movie theater attack in July that killed 12 people and injured 70 and in the slaying of 20 children and six adults at a Connecticut elementary school in December.

___

FULL AUTOMATICS

They're on the battlefield and show up in action movies, but fully automatic weapons aren't common among civilians in the United States.

While a semi-automatic can fire one bullet per trigger pull, an automatic keeps firing bullets as long as the trigger is pulled once. Full automatics range from the Prohibition-era machine guns to modern rifles, pistols or shotguns.

Sales of full automatics are restricted by federal law ? buyers need a special permit from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. That requires an extensive background check and paying a $200 tax. Some states and local governments prohibit private ownership of full automatics.

___

ASSAULT WEAPONS

In 1994, Congress passed and President Bill Clinton signed into law a ban on some semi-automatic rifles and handguns that were deemed "assault weapons." Defining the term was tricky then and remains controversial today.

Under that now-expired law, some new guns were banned by name, including the Uzi, the AK-47 and the Colt AR-15, which is similar to the military's standard issue M16.

The law also covered some other semi-automatic rifles that are used with detachable magazines ? devices that hold ammunition and feed the bullets into the firing chamber automatically. Such rifles were banned only if they had two or more additional characteristics listed in the law, such as a folding stock or a pistol grip.

Guns already sold to buyers before the ban were exempt and could be resold. Meanwhile, manufacturers skirted the ban by producing similar guns under new names or making minor design changes, such as removing a bayonet mount.

Obama says he wants Congress to ban what he calls "military-style assault weapons," but he hasn't defined the term, so it's unclear which guns would be covered. He describes his plan as reinstating and strengthening the 1994 assault weapon law.

That 1994 law, however, wouldn't have covered the military-looking Bushmaster .223 rifles used in the Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., shootings, had it still been in place in 2012. The old law did apply to another aspect of those shootings ? high-capacity magazines.

Why would a person use an assault weapon? They are considered by some people to be fun to shoot; they can be used for hunting, depending on the weapon and the size of the animal; and because they resemble military rifles they can appear particularly menacing when used for personal defense or home protection.

___

HIGH-CAPACITY MAGAZINE

Obama wants to reinstate the ban on sales of new high-capacity magazines, defined as those that hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition.

These magazines allow a shooter using a semi-automatic weapon like the Bushmaster .223 to fire more bullets before pausing to reload. Police said Connecticut school attack suspect Adam Lanza had several 30-round magazines with him. In the Colorado theater attack, police have said suspect James Holmes used a 100-round drum magazine.

___

GUN OWNERS

More than a third of Americans ? 36 percent ? say someone in their household owns a gun, according to an Associated Press-GfK poll conducted Jan. 10-14.

Millions use guns for hunting, sport and target shooting. Hunting guns include an array of shotguns and rifles of various types and sizes, including semi-automatics and the traditional bolt-action rifles. The prey and a hunter's personal preference determine the weapon and the kind of ammunition used.

Some people keep guns solely for protection. Carrying a concealed handgun is legal in every state but Illinois under certain conditions; for example, the gun owner might need to pass a background check first. Some states require safety classes. Some state and local laws, including in California and New York, make it difficult if not impossible to get a license to carry a concealed weapon. Illinois law bans carrying concealed weapons, but a federal appeals court overturned that law in December. The ruling is likely to be appealed.

Federal laws prevent the government from tracking how many guns are sold every year and who buys them, so there are no definitive statistics.

Roughly 310 million guns were owned or available for sale in the United States in 2009, according to a study by the nonpartisan Congressional Research Service. That's about 114 million handguns, 110 million rifles and 86 million shotguns.

___

BACKGROUND CHECKS

Federal law requires anyone who buys a gun from a licensed dealer to submit to a background check. Convicted criminals and people who have been declared by a judge to be "mentally defective" are among those barred from buying a gun.

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence says as many as 40 percent of all gun sales are completed without a background check. That's because sales between private gun owners and sales at gun shows are exempt under federal law.

Only California and Rhode Island require background checks for sales between private sellers and buyers. Colorado, Illinois, New York and Oregon require background checks for all sales at gun shows. Three other states, Connecticut, Maryland and Pennsylvania, require such reviews for handgun sales.

Obama has proposed a federal law requiring universal background checks for every gun sale.

___

SECOND AMENDMENT

It's the Constitution's Second Amendment that guarantees the right to "keep and bear arms."

The actual text reads: "A well regulated militia being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." What that means has been debated and argued for decades.

The Supreme Court in 2008 ruled that Americans have a right to firearms, regardless of whether they serve in a militia. The justices also have signaled that some gun regulations could survive legal challenges, but they haven't resolved which ones are permissible.

New mutations discovered driving malignant melanoma

Jan. 24, 2013 ? Two new mutations that collectively occur in 71 percent of malignant melanoma tumors have been discovered in what scientists call the "dark matter" of the cancer genome, where cancer-related mutations haven't been previously found.

Reporting their findings in the Jan. 24 issue of Science Express, the researchers from Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute said the highly "recurrent" mutations -- occurring in the tumors of many people -- may be the most common mutations in melanoma cells found to date.

The researchers said these cancer-associated mutations are the first to be discovered in the vast regions of DNA in cancer cells that do not contain genetic instructions for making proteins. The mutations are located in non-protein-coding DNA that regulates the activity of genes.

This non-coding DNA, much of which was previously dismissed as "junk," accounts for 99 percent of a cell's genome. A large number of oncogenic mutations in cancer have been identified in the past several decades, but all have been found within the actual genetic blueprints for proteins.

"This new finding represents an initial foray into the 'dark matter' of the cancer genome," said Levi Garraway, MD, PhD, of Dana-Farber and the Broad and the article's senior author.

"In addition, this represents the discovery of two of the most prevalent melanoma gene mutations. Considered as a whole, these two TERT promoter mutations are even more common than BRAF mutations in melanoma. Altogether, this discovery could cause us to think more creatively about the possible benefits of targeting TERT in cancer treatment or prevention."

The mutations affect a promoter region -- a stretch of DNA code that regulates the expression of a gene -- adjacent to the TERT gene. TERT contains the recipe for making telomerase reverse transcriptase, an enzyme that can make cells virtually immortal, and is often found overexpressed in cancer cells. A promoter region of DNA controls the rate of a gene's transcription -- the copying of its DNA recipe into a message used by the cell to manufacture a protein.

"We think these mutations in the promoter region are potentially one way the TERT gene can be activated," said Franklin Huang, MD, PhD, co-first author of the report along with Harvard MD-PhD student Eran Hodis, of Dana-Farber and the Broad Institute.

To investigate the mutation's effect, the researchers hooked the mutant TERT promoter to a gene that makes luciferase -- a light-emitting protein. They observed that the mutant promoter increased the production of luciferase in laboratory cell lines. In the same way, the scientists presume, the mutant promoter in human pigmented skin cells can send the TERT gene into overdrive, potentially contributing to the development of melanoma.

The mutations were discovered when the scientists sifted through data from whole-genome sequencing of malignant melanoma tumors. Unlike "whole-exome" searches that examine only the protein-coding DNA of a cell's genome, whole-genome searches scan all of the DNA, including the non-coding regions.

In analyzing whole-genome data, the investigators discovered the two somatic, or not-inherited, mutations in 17 of 19 (89 percent) of the tumors. Next, they sequenced a larger number of melanoma tumors and found that the two mutations were present in 71 percent of tumors in total.

The researchers said the same mutations are present in cell lines from some other malignancies, and that preliminary evidence showed they might be unusually common in bladder and liver cancers. They also noted that the discovery of these important mutations in DNA previously not linked to cancer-causing alterations highlights the value of whole-genome searches of tumor DNA.

Other authors include Mary Jue Xu, a student at Harvard Medical School; Gregory V. Kryukov, PhD, of the Broad; and Lynda Chin, MD, of M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

The research was supported in part by the National Institutes of Health (T32 CA009172, T32GM07753, DP2OD002750, and R33CA126674), the Mittelman Family Fellowship, the American Cancer Society, the Novartis Institutes for Biomedical Research, the Melanoma Research Alliance, and the Starr Cancer Consortium.

The 50 Most Innovative Companies - Business Insider

One of the most worrying trends in business has been the slow pace of innovation in health care. While plenty of interesting work is going on, there haven't been many blockbusters.

Basically, massive R&D spending (there are 8 pharmaceutical companies among the top 20 spenders on research) hasn't led to anywhere near as many new and profitable medicines as companies had hoped.

That's why a survey of senior executives by the Boston Consulting Group didn't find a single business focused primarily on health care in the top 50 of the world's most innovative companies.?

That's of concern to companies that can't get a return on their investment. It's of even more concern to society. Plenty of great research gets done outside of pharmaceutical companies and large biotechs. But when it comes to the process of actually developing an idea into a pill, powder, or something injected (much, much harder than you think), going through clinical trials, and getting a drug approved, they're pretty much the only game in town, because that process is so unbelievably complex and expensive.?

So on one hand, we're not getting many breakthrough medicines. And on the other, few companies have extra resources to devote to low margin, but essential things like new antibiotics. We haven't discovered a new class of antibiotics in over 20 years, even as diseases become more resistant to the drugs we have.

What's evolved is an industry that's scared to take risks or make big bets. They often wait for smaller firms to prove a concept before getting involved themselves. That hasn't proved to be a sustainable long-term strategy either.?

This is not a recent development, and it's one that's getting worse, as this bcg.perspective chart of the survey's results shows:

There's no easy fix; you can't flip a switch to make better science, and pouring money into the problem clearly doesn't work. What's needed is a greater focus on process, on getting more from less.?

Part of that is a management question, making sure that big, in house R&D is accountable for results. Whether that's smaller, more focused teams, or better approaches, that's an experiment that's still in progress.

The other is being more efficient in coming up with ideas, for example, using new imaging technologies that can help reveal how much energy a tumor is using, and thus how well a molecule is working. Essentially, it's about finding a way to industrialize the discovery process, along the lines of what's already happened with sequencing people's genes.?

The most important step is admitting that what's going on now isn't working, and aggressively changing sooner, rather than later.

European military aircraft with weapons and soldiers on board ...

According to witnesses cited by news agencies a military aircraft carrying weapons and foreign soldiers has arrived at an army base in Sevare in central Mali, not far from the captured town of Konna.

One witness at the airport reported seeing weapons and soldiers leaving a C-160 military transport aircraft.

The Malian defense ministry said it would hold a news conference on the situation on Friday.

One unnamed Malian official confirmed the arrival of the military aircraft and said the aircraft arrived from a European country.

On Thursday al Qaeda-linked rebels drove the Malian army out of the strategic northern town of Konna. It became a major setback to government forces trying to dislodge the Islamists from the northern territory of Mali which they captured in April 2012.

The UN Security Council held emergency talks on Mali on Thursday amid growing international concerns Islamist forces may use the country as a launch pad to stage attacks. The Council called on U.N. member states "to provide assistance to the Malian Defense and Security Forces in order to reduce the threat posed by terrorist organizations and associated groups."

After the meeting France's U.N. Ambassador Gerard Araud told reporters the groups who captured the city of Konna Thursday are now threatening the city of Mopti, which has 100,000 inhabitants. He also declined to say how his country would respond to Mali President's request, telling reporters a decision would be announced in Paris on Friday.

On December 22, 2012 the UN Security Council authorized an African-led force to support Malian forces in recovering the north but set no timeline for military action. Instead it set out benchmarks to be met before the start of offensive operations.

Mali was plunged into crisis by a March 2012 coup which allowed Tuareg rebels, who have long felt marginalized by Mali's government, to seize the north. But months later, the rebels were kicked out by Islamist groups allied with al-Qaida, which have imposed strict Shariah law throughout the north.

New Android apps worth downloading: Facebook Pages, SwiftKey Flow Beta update, Steampunk Racing 3D

Another of Facebook?s special ?standalone apps, Facebook Pages, has finally made its way over to the Google Play store. It allows you to manage your Facebook page just as you would from the web, which is handy if you?re running a brand or building a community. We?ve also got an update to the SwiftKey Flow beta, bringing some fixes to the gesture keyboard, and Steampunk Racing 3D, a game that has you blasting turn of the century vehicles with outlandish weapons.

What?s it about? Facebook?s app specifically designed to manage ?Pages? on the social network lets you field messages, check comments, and post updates to your brand or group?s specialized page.

What?s cool? Lots of people use Facebook personally, but for those who have pages for things like brands, bands or professional reasons, Facebook has created a special app just for dealing with its non-personal Pages. It?s extremely handy if you happen to run one of those sections of Facebook, because Pages gives you full mobile control. That means you can make updates when something happens, post photos and videos, and responding to page users is a lot easier, which helps engage your audience.

Who?s it for? This one?s specifically for people who manage a Facebook Page, so if that?s you, you?ll want Facebook Pages.

What?s it like? For your personal stuff, get the standard Facebook app.

SwiftKey Flow Beta update (Free)

What?s it about? Gesture-based keyboard SwiftKey Flow is in public beta available for free from its creators, and it just received a serious update.

What?s cool? Seeing SwiftKey Flow in action is pretty impressive. The app allows users to type on the standard Android keyboard using swiping, rather than typing, but with the added benefit of allowing you to move extremely quick through your words and never lift your finger off the keyboard. The result is an impressive, fast typing solution for using your Android keyboard. The beta?s most recent update adds a lot of performance improvements, like better battery life, the ability to delete single words if you should mess up while typing, and the ability to switch quickly between ?flowing? and tapping. You can download the beta from SwiftKey?s site here. You can also watch their video:

Who?s it for? If you?re a fan of SwiftKey?s other keyboard apps, like SwiftKey 3, you?ll want to give Flow a try.

What?s it like? As mentioned, try SwiftKey 3, as well as TouchPal Keyboard, for some more gesture typing solutions.

What?s it about? If you can?t tell from the name, Steampunk Racing 3D is a racing title that uses a ?Steampunk? art style and sports solid 3-D graphics.

What?s cool? The primary thing that makes Steampunk Racing fun is the design of its vehicles. Steampunk is an art style noted for the inclusion of things like wood structures, brass piping and pressure gauges, so the vehicles of Steampunk Racing look like they could be more scientific versions of something you might have seen in 1890. That means you?ll fly around tracks in buggies and trucks from when cars were young, and you?ll also attack opponents with special weapons, as well. Steampunk Racing includes 16 tracks and more than 30 weapons, as well as a single-player mode and a six-racer multiplayer mode.

Who?s it for? If you like racing titles with a bit of a different graphical flare ? and the ability to blow up your opponents ? check out Steampunk Racing 3D.

What?s it like? Remedy?s Death Rally does some great stuff by combining racing with blowing things up, and things get pretty crazy in Reckless Racing, too.

Beauty of LED Module- Its Creativity and Flourishing Markets ...

As a cheap and an easy replacement for incandescent, neon or display lights, LED module has reached almost in every aspect for its uniqueness, attractiveness and reliability. Until 1962, with its first breakthrough, commercial production of LED started in earlier 1970s. With the advancement in technology, production of LED grew to maintain its efficiency and reliability. Most LEDs were made out of 5mm T7/4 or 3mm T1 package but due to rising power output, excess heat was shed out and complex packages were adopted to make efficient heat dissipation. Today it is used in various fields starting from aviation lighting to advertise and general lighting.

Features of LED

Now-a-days LED is potted in colored and clear plastic bodies. With an operational range of 30-60 mill watts electrical power, it has a high luminous efficiency and for general purpose need one watt or more for its operation. Its growing fields into the markets have led to different types of varieties being used today. Form Led Modules to LED flex more and more products are created to meet the need. With various advantages in efficiency, color, size, lifetime, etc the demand of LED is increasing vigorously.

LED in different fields

From public lighting to indoor lighting LED are used in every ways as a smart, attractive resource.

LED module which is a self contained LED designed to function independently are used for energy efficient and portable lighting emitting a bright light when powered on. These include night lights, outdoor lighting, etc. They are jostle resistant which makes a better bulb option to fix portable lighting.

LED RGB is very small in shape used for various purposes. These 5mm units carry four pins, of which one has each color with a common cathode. Mixing color can be created out of it

. LED lights module is another type of lighting, which is more popular because of multiple factors. It has concentrated directional outputs Available along with LED lights opposing from those in incandescent or fluorescent lights. These LEDs can easily fit into the camera or recording device and is very much useful for decorative lighting.

Flexible led is another useful variety of LED. It is designed for lighting professional, architectural lighting, concealed lighting, sign letter lighting and for many other applications. Its base is flat and flexible. There are different types of it. Typically, it is twice in brightness than other.

Manufacturer and supplier of LED

LED is manufactured in almost every corners of the world. The only difference is the quality of the good produced. Different institutions like Illusion LED limited, King Star opto-electronics Co. Limited, General Lighting Electronics Co. Limited, etc manufacture and supplies LED on a massive scale. Each institution creates different item. It only varies when comes from technological views. LED bar supplier are creating a new market upon it. Led bar idea is not very old idea, it was introduced a few years ago and initially the response of the market was not that good. As buyer was hesitant to change their traditional lighting systems, which is also comparatively cheaper than the LED bars yet, with the passage of time, people realized the various benefits offered by LED Bars, which traditional lighting system failed to offer. These benefits include cost efficient and cost effective. Led bars have longer life than the typical lighting, though they are expensive when bought, but can equalize the balance in mere 12 18 months. So if you are thinking of a long run, its better to opt Led bars.

From day to day life using of Flexible Led Flexible Led is becoming an important part of human beings. From its use in optical fibers to free space optics it is becoming evident that future generation cannot practically live without LED and Led bar will thrive upon it.

Furor over French move to block online ads

(AP) ? France's government says it has persuaded a leading Internet provider to stop blocking online advertisements ? a controversial move that would have hit online search giants such as Google.

The French minister for the Internet economy, Fleur Pellerin, met Monday with leading figures from the online industry and an executive from Internet service provider Free to try to defuse tensions over the issue.

Free last week started automatically blocking ads for some users. Many Internet companies such as Google earn big revenues from such ads while offering searches or other services for free.

Pellerin told reporters afterward that Free had agreed to abandon the policy, saying "no lone actor can jeopardize the system in a unilateral way."

Free officials did not immediately offer comment.

TV documentary features presidents' staff chiefs

(AP) ? Makers of a Discovery network documentary on presidential chiefs of staff have a perfect participation record.

All 19 living men who had that job gave interviews for "The Presidents' Gatekeepers." The four-hour documentary is expected to air in two parts early this summer.

Filmmakers Jules and Gedeon Naudet (naw-DAY) said Saturday that their well-regarded previous documentary on the Sept. 11 terrorist attack in New York was a calling card that probably helped them convince some former chiefs to participate.

Chris Whipple, formerly of ABC News, and ex-White House photographer David Hume Kennerly are also producers.

Their longest interview was with former Vice President Dick Cheney, who was President Gerald Ford's chief of staff in the 1970s.

Cheney said a chief is more powerful than a vice president.

Eckhart Tolle ? Interview By Kim Eng ? True Love And The ...

EckhartTolleDuring my travels, one of the most frequently asked question is ?What is it like to be in relationship with an enlightened being?? Why this question? Perhaps they have the idea or image of an ideal relationship, and want to know more about it. Perhaps their mind wants to project itself to a future time when they, too, will be in an ideal relationship and find themselves through it.

What is it like to be in relationship with an enlightened being?

As long as I have the idea in my head ?I have a relationship? or ?I am in a relationship,? no matter with whom, I suffer. This I have learnt.

With the concept of ?relationship? come expectations, memories of past relationships, and further personally and culturally conditioned mental concepts of what a ?relationship? should be like. Then I would try to make reality conform to these concepts. And it never does. And again I suffer. The fact of the matter is: there are no relationships. There is only the present moment, and in the moment there is only relating.

How we relate, or rather how well we love, depends on how empty we are of ideas, concepts, expectations.

Recently, I asked Eckhart to say a few words on the ego?s search for ?love relationships.? Our conversation quickly went deeper to touch upon some of the most profound aspects of human existence. Here?s what he said:

Eckhart Tolle: What is conventionally called ?love? is an ego strategy to avoid surrender. You are looking to someone to give you that which can only come to you in the state of surrender. The ego uses that person as a substitute to avoid having to surrender. The Spanish language is the most honest in this respect. It uses the same verb, te quiero, for ?I love you? and ?I want you.? To the ego, loving and wanting are the same, whereas true love has no wanting in it, no desire to possess or for your partner to change. The ego singles someone out and makes them special. It uses that person to cover up the constant underlying feeling of discontent, of ?not enough,? of anger and hate, which are closely related. These are facets of an underlying deep seated feeling in human beings that is inseparable from the egoic state.

When the ego singles something out and says ?I love? this or that, it?s an unconscious attempt to cover up or remove the deep-seated feelings that always accompany the ego: the discontent, the unhappiness, the sense of insufficiency that is so familiar. For a little while, the illusion actually works. Then inevitably, at some point, the person you singled out, or made special in your eyes, fails to function as a cover up for your pain, hate, discontent or unhappiness which all have their origin in that sense of insufficiency and incompleteness. Then, out comes the feeling that was covered up, and it gets projected onto the person that had been singled out and made special ? who you thought would ultimately ?save you.? Suddenly love turns to hate. The ego doesn?t realize that the hatred is a projection of the universal pain that you feel inside. The ego believes that this person is causing the pain. It doesn?t realize that the pain is the universal feeling of not being connected with the deeper level of your being ? not being at one with yourself.

The object of love is interchangeable, as interchangeable as the object of egoic wanting. Some people go through many relationships. They fall in love and out of love many times. They love a person for a while until it doesn?t work anymore, because no person can permanently cover up that pain.

Only surrender can give you what you were looking for in the object of your love. The ego says surrender is not necessary because I love this person. It?s an unconscious process of course. The moment you accept completely what is, something inside you emerges that had been covered up by egoic wanting. It is an innate, indwelling peace, stillness, aliveness. It is the unconditioned, who you are in your essence. It is what you had been looking for in the love object. It is yourself. When that happens, a completely different kind of love is present which is not subject to love / hate. It doesn?t single out one thing or person as special. It?s absurd to even use the same word for it. Now it can happen that even in a normal love / hate relationship, occasionally, you enter the state of surrender. Temporarily, briefly, it happens: you experience a deeper universal love and a complete acceptance that can sometimes shine through, even in an otherwise egoic relationship. If surrender is not sustained, however, it gets covered up again with the old egoic patterns. So, I?m not saying that the deeper, true love cannot be present occasionally, even in a normal love / hate relationship. But it is rare and usually short-lived.

Whenever you accept what is, something deeper emerges than what is. So, you can be trapped in the most painful dilemma, external or internal, the most painful feelings or situation, and the moment you accept what is, you go beyond it, you transcend it. Even if you feel hatred, the moment you accept that this is what you feel, you transcend it. It may still be there, but suddenly you are at a deeper place where it doesn?t matter that much anymore.

The entire phenomenal universe exists because of the tension between the opposites. Hot and cold, growth and decay, gain and loss, success and failure, the polarities that are part of existence, and of course part of every relationship.

Kim Eng: Then it?s correct to say, we can never get rid of the polarities?

ET: We cannot get rid of polarities on the level of form. However, you can transcend the polarities through surrender. You are then in touch with a deeper place within yourself where, as it were, the polarities no longer exist. They continue to exist on the outer level. However, even there, something changes in the way in which the polarities manifest in your life when you are in a state of acceptance or surrender. The polarities manifest in a more benign and gentle way.

The more unconscious you are, the more you are identified with form. The essence of unconsciousness is this: identification with form, whether it is an external form (a situation, place, event or experience), a thought form or an emotion. The more attached to form, the more unsurrendered you are, and the more extreme, violent or harsh your experience of the polarities becomes. There are people on this planet who live virtually in hell and on the same planet there are others who live a relatively peaceful life. The ones who are at peace inside will still experience the polarities, but in a much more benign way, not the extreme way in which many humans still experience them. So, the way in which the polarities are experienced does change. The polarities themselves cannot be removed, but one could say, the whole universe becomes somewhat more benevolent. It?s no longer so threatening. The world is no longer perceived as hostile, which is how the ego perceives it.

KE: If awakening or living a life in an awakened state does not change the natural order of things, duality, the tension between the opposites, what does living a life in the awakened state do? Does it affect the world, or only one?s subjective experience of the world?

ET: When you live in surrender, something comes through you into the world of duality that is not of this world.

KE: Does that actually change the outer world?

ET: Internal and external are ultimately one. When you no longer perceive the world as hostile, there is no more fear, and when there is no more fear, you think, speak and act differently. Love and compassion arise, and they affect the world. Even if you find yourself in a conflict situation, there is an outflow of peace into the polarities. So then, something does change. There are some teachers or teachings that say, nothing changes. That is not the case. Something very important does change. That which is beyond form shines through the form, the eternal shines through the form into this world of form.

KE: Is it right to say that it is your lack of ?reaction against,? your acceptance of the opposites of this world, that brings about changes in the way the opposites manifest?

ET: Yes. The opposites continue to happen, but they are not fueled by you anymore. What you said is a very important point: the ?lack of reaction? means that the polarities are not fueled. This means, you often experience a collapse of the polarities, such as in conflict situations. No person, no situation is made into an ?enemy.?

KE: So, the opposites, instead of becoming strengthened, become weakened. And perhaps this is how they begin to dissolve.

ET: That?s right. Living in that way is the beginning of the end of the world.

Great Barrier Reef corals found at 410 feet

Even four times as deep as most scuba divers venture, the Great Barrier Reef blooms. A new exploration by a remote-operated submersible has found the reef's deepest coral yet.

Specimens of Leptoseris coral are living 410 feet (125 meters) below the ocean's surface, a discovery that expedition leader Pim Bongaerts of the University of Queensland called "mind-blowing."

Coral reefs are made of colonies of polyps which secret a rocklike exoskeleton. The polyps have a symbiotic relationship with algae that provide them nutrients using photosynthesis. Because this process requires light, coral reefs thrive in clear, relatively shallow water.

"The discovery shows that there are coral communities on the Great Barrier Reef existing at considerably greater depths than we could have ever imagined," Bongaerts said in a statement.

Coral colonies
The 410-foot distance is surprising for the Great Barrier Reef, where scuba divers find stunning coral displays at depths down to 100 feet. But corals are known to live deep elsewhere. In the Gulf of Mexico, researchers have found the coral Lophelia pertusathriving 2,620 feet (799 meters) down. Lophelia doesn't need sunlight to survive. In Puerto Rico, light-dependent corals survive as far down as 500 feet (150 meters).

Bongaerts and his colleagues received funding from the Catlin Group Ltd., a global specialty insurer, to explore the Great Barrier Reef as part of an effort to understand how climate change is altering the oceans.

On the outer edge of the Ribbon Reefs, off the northern Great Barrier Reef, the researchers hit unusually calm seas and were able to deploy a remote-operated vehicle, or ROV, off the edge of the Australian continental shelf, where the ocean floor plummets hundreds of feet. It was a tough dive, said expedition member Paul Muir, a taxonomist from the Museum of Tropical Queensland. [See Photos of the Deep Reef Corals ]

"With more than 250 meters of cable out to provide power and communications with the ROV, it was a real struggle to collect a specimen of one of these corals," Muir said in a statement.

The deep reef
The team persevered and brought one precious Leptoseris coral sample back to sea level. Divers also collected a specimen of Acropora, a staghorn coral that makes up the majority of most of the world's reefs, at a depth of 240 feet (73 meters).

The Great Barrier Reef's corals typically peter out in the Great Barrier Reef around the 330-foot (100-meter) level. At greater depths, the corals are replaced by non-light-dependent sponges and sea fans.

"These discoveries show just how little we really know about the reef and how much more is yet to be discovered," Bongaerts said. "This poses lots of questions for us, but now we have specimens, we'll be able to analyze them much more closely and can expect our findings to reveal a far greater understanding of just what is going on to enable reef corals to survive at such extreme depths."

The Great Barrier Reef has been in decline, with half of it vanishing in the last 27 years, according to a study released in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences last October. Climate change is boosting the temperature of the oceans, causing some of the damage. Another reef foe is the crown-of-thorns starfish, which eats coral. The starfish populations have exploded because of nutrient runoff from agricultural fertilizers.

A previous version of this story made an incorrect reference to Acropora coral as living at the 125-meter depth. Follow Stephanie Pappas on Twitter @sipappas or LiveScience @livescience. We're also on Facebook and Google+.

Branden R. Williams, Business Security Specialist ? The SBIC 2013 ...

January 3rd, 2013 by Branden Williams

Today the Security for Business Innovation Council (SBIC) released their 2013 Trends Report which is chocked full of lots of great stuff for security professionals to consider as they begin to tackle the challenges this year will bring. While this report is not like anything the SBIC has released in the past, the four key findings are quite compelling and true to much of what my mission has been over the last several years. They are:

  • Boost risk and business skills. Readers of my column (which has not been updated here in a while, but will be soon) know that the security professional that understands how the business works will be much more effective in adding value to his position and to the company. We?ve moved beyond the line of separation between IT and Business, yet many security professionals try to do their jobs without an understanding of either.
  • Middle-management outreach. Often times security professionals push policy into the organization without explanation or even input from the folks ultimately impacted by the change. This has to change to ensure that the policy is followed.
  • Supply-chain issues. This applies both for the informational supply chain as well as for the actual movement of goods (which is often coordinated electronically).
  • Build and act upon tech savvy action plans. Security professionals face many disruptive technologies, and instead of shunning or ignoring them, we must enable them to work safely in our companies.

Go check out the report and see this video of EMC?s CSO discussing some of the key findings.

Use caution when operating ATVs | Jennings Daily News

All-terrain vehicles (ATV?s) are not used only for recreation any more, and have become an important tool in many work environments.

Because ATV?s are popular for work and recreation, injuries and fatalities are all a constant concern that should not be ignored. From 1992 to 2007, the Bureau of Labor Statistics reports, there were 297 work-related ATV deaths in the United States, and 75 percent of them were males age 35 and older. Sixty percent of the fatal accidents occurred on farms, and 20 percent on highways.

?Rollovers are the most common cause of crashes,? said Louisiana Worker?s Compensation Director of Safety and Loss Prevention Mike Page. ?And those in the animal production industry have the highest risk of injury.?

ATV?s are among the deadliest products under the jurisdiction of the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The CPSC recently reported that between 2001 and 2010 there was an average of 659 fatal accidents (both recreational and work-related) per year involving ATV?s nationwide. In that same time frame, ATV accidents were the cause of more than 130,000 visits per year to hospital emergency rooms.

In Louisiana, there have been 246 fatalities (both recreational and work-related) from 1982 to 2010 involving ATV?s.

Incidents are generally the result of the following:

. Operating at excessive speeds

. Operating the vehicle on public roads

. Carrying passengers

. Riding on slopes and levees

. Carrying unbalanced loads or exceeding the recommended load limit of the vehicle

. Operator not wearing a helmet

. Lack of proper training

To reduce the possibility of being involved in an ATV incident, you should follow at least the following accepted practices:

. Obtain proper training for the ATV you will operate.

. Read and understand the operator?s manual before you ride.

. Fully understand the terrain on which you will be operating the vehicle. Are there site-specific hazards such as levees, embankments, excavations, or soft soil conditions that could result in the vehicle overturning?

. Always wear a helmet, gloves, long sleeves, pants, and boots.

. If you must haul a load, ensure it is balanced and does not exceed the manufacturer?s weight limit for the vehicle.

. Conduct a pre-ride inspection in accordance with the manufacturer?s recommendations.

. When riding watch for hazards such as rocks, stumps, fences, guy wires, embankments, levees, and low-hanging branches.

. Do not ride at excessive speeds. Adjust your speed for the terrain on which you are traveling.

. Do not carry passengers if the ATV is not designed to carry multiple persons.

. Keep your hands and feet on the controls to maintain control of the vehicle.

. Do not talk on your cell phone when riding an ATV.

. Do not operate an ATV under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

. Do not drive on paved roads. ATV?s are designed for off-road and are difficult to control on paved roads.

(AP) ? A man armed with an old military rifle and a handgun shot and killed three women and wounded two men in a southern Swiss village, police said Thursday.

Police shot and wounded the suspect after he threatened to also shoot officers who arrived at the scene after the shooting in the village of Daillon on Wednesday evening, said interim cantonal police chief Robert Steiner. The gunman was then arrested.

Steiner said the suspect was using a military rifle that was once standard issue in the Swiss army during the first half of the 20th century.

"The shooter pointed his weapon at our colleagues, so they had to open fire to neutralize him, to avoid being injured themselves," police spokesman Jean-Marie Bornet told Swiss radio. He said the shooter lived in Daillon, and the motive for the shooting was not clear.

Prosecutor Catherine Seppey said the shooter ? who was not identified ? knew several of the victims, but "he was not known for making threats." He was unemployed and had been receiving psychiatric care since at least 2005, when he was first admitted to a psychiatric hospital, and was under the care of the cantonal agency that provides services and counseling to the disabled, she said.

Three of the victims, aged 32, 54 and 79, died at the scene, and the two injured men, aged 33 and 63, were taken to hospitals, Seppey said.

"We have no words to express ourselves after an event like this," Christophe Germanier, head of the Conthey district where the shooting occurred, told a news conference.

It wasn't immediately clear how the shooter obtained his weapons, but the rifle is popularly sold in military surplus markets.

Guns are popular among the Swiss. There are at least 2.3 million weapons stashed among a population of less than 8 million people. Gun clubs are popular in rural parts of the country, with children as young as 10 taking part in shooting competitions.

The country's firearms laws are relaxed, but haven't led to a high gun homicide rate. They have, however, raised concern about a high incidence of firearms suicides.

All able-bodied Swiss men who are required to perform military duty often take their army-issued rifle home with them even after completing military service. In 2007, the government began requiring that nearly all of the ammo is kept at secure army depots.

In 2011, voters rejected a proposal to tighten the gun laws, siding with gun enthusiasts, sports shooters and supporters of Switzerland's citizen soldier tradition.
