It?s inevitable: When, why, and how Facebook will take on Google in search

Facebook and Google have been on a collision course for years, and their competitiveness has only increased with the release of Google+ just 14 months ago. As the service becomes more and more popular, one has to wonder how Facebook feels about the search giant encroaching on its turf. More importantly, one also has to wonder if Facebook has plans to hit Google back where it hurts.

Yet we already know that Facebook is going to be doing just that. In fact, the social networking giant has already started. Three months ago, Facebook updated the grey text on its search bar from just the word ?Search? to ?Search for people, places and things.?

Two months ago, Facebook added sponsored ads to its search results. While this is by no means as effective as sponsored results on Google, it?s certainly a start. Companies now have yet another way they can spend their ad dollars on Facebook.

This past week, Facebook added searches to its Activity Log. It?s the only type of activity in there that is being added before it can even be shared. Facebook is all about adding social layers to everything on the Internet, and the move suggests the social networking giant may one day let you share your searches with your friends.

Furthermore, Facebook co-founder and CEO Mark Zuckerberg is no longer denying the company?s interest in search. At TechCrunch?s Disrupt conference, he was asked about many things, and search was one that he didn?t make an effort to deflect. Here?s my transcription of his answer regarding search:

You know, search is interesting. We do on the order of a billion queries a day already, and we?re basically not even trying. Right, so I mean today the vast majority of search is people trying to find people but there are also a meaningful portion of queries trying to find Pages, Brand Pages, other Business Pages, and apps. There?s a bunch of it that actually does kinda link to commercial behavior. I think there is a big opportunity there and at some point we just need to just go do that.

But you know search is interesting. It?s going in this interesting direction. The legacy around search is you get these search engines like Google and Bing and what Yahoo was doing before. You basically type in keywords and the search engine runs some magic to tell you what it thinks the answer is that matches your keyword. But I think search engines are really evolving towards giving you a set of answers. It?s not just like ?here, type in something and show me some relevant stuff.? It?s ?I have a specific question, answer this question for me.?

When you think about it from that perspective, Facebook is pretty uniquely positioned to answer a lot of the questions people have. What sushi restaurants have my friends gone to in New York in the past six months and Liked? Which of my friends, or friends of friends, work at a company that I?m interested in working at because I want to talk to them about what it?s going to be like to work there.

These are queries that you could potentially do at Facebook if we built out this system that you just couldn?t do anywhere else. And at some point we?ll do it. I do think that?s one kinda obvious thing that would be interesting for us to do in the future if we got to a state where we were excited about it.

As you can see, Zuckerberg says multiple times that search is on his bucket list. He covers the who, the what, and of course the where. Now let?s look at the when, the why, and the how.

When?

I doubt we?ll see anything major show up this year. In fact, I wouldn?t be surprised if there?s no huge search launch next year either.

Zuckerberg is in for the long-haul, and while search is definitely something he?s interested in, I think there are many other areas he wants to tackle first. Getting multiple solid revenue streams down is of course important, but as he has said many times, mobile is his number one priority. That?s why we?re seeing the new schedule for updating apps.

Search is definitely coming. Yet there?s no specific answer to the when question, and here?s why (and how).

Why?

It?s the future. Aside from the ?If Google is going to attack us in social, then we?ll attack it in search? argument, I have to agree with Zuckerberg in that social search is where search is headed.

Of course I doubt search engines will ever be replaced by social networks, but the latter will certainly eat into the former. As Zuckerberg muses, the whole point of search engines is to give you answers, and there are many questions that your friends can respond to better than an algorithm.

Therefore, if you can get an algorithm to answer questions based on what your friends say, share, and Like, then you?ll create something worthwhile. If you can create something worthwhile, chances are there?s a way to monetize it.

How?

I think Facebook will be tackling search in many, many stages. There will be days when there are larger announcements than others, but so far it looks like the company will be adding features as they see fit, testing them to see how they?re used, tweaking them accordingly, possibly killing those that don?t work, and then repeating the cycle with the next search feature. This is just how Facebook operates, and I don?t think it will be changing that for search.

There won?t ever be a FacebookSearch.com that you?ll be required to go to. There will just be more and more search functionality added to Facebook.com, as well as features that have nothing to do with search, but that result in you no longer having to search for something.

If I can get in touch with a company via Facebook, then why would I ever need to Google their website? If I can learn everything that I need to know about Mark Zuckerberg on Facebook, then why would I bother to Google him? If I can find a great restaurant to eat at, based on my Facebook friend recommendations, then why would I bother to Google for one?

  3. Brand your maps. Customize your mind maps using consistent backgrounds, borders, typefaces, line, fill, and typeface colors that are used throughout your firm?s corporate identity. You can also brand your maps by choosing different borders and by adding map titles, copyright information, or your firm?s name to the headers and footers of your map.

  1. Use Notes to reduce clutter. Avoid including too much detail in topics and subtopics by limiting them to just key words and phrases. To help you, you can use the Notes feature available in most mind mapping tools to add the more detailed information you?ll need in sentences, paragraphs, and lists. A small icon in your mind map will indicate the presence of a Note associated with a topic, and clicking the icon or running the mouse pointer over the icon reveals the Notes text. (The text will appear in the proper location when you export your map to Microsoft Word, or another software program.)
  2. Add comments for reminders. The Comments feature is similar to Notes. Use it to add reminders, prompts, or warnings to topics without adding clutter. Comments are especially important when sharing maps with others.
  3. Take advantage of keyboard shortcuts. Use keyboard shortcuts to navigate from topic to topic, show/hide subtopics, add new topics, add links, or edit and format text. Keyboard shortcuts eliminate the need to remove your hands from the keyboard to open menus and select commands or options. Though there might be a slight learning curve while getting used to your keyboard shortcuts, it should soon become second nature to you. (And if you want to create some customized shortcuts for your favorite tasks, consider using a tool like Alfred.)
  4. Explore View options. In addition to collapsing and expanding topics, the better mind mapping software programs allow you to temporarily display one topic at a time, along with the subtopics associated with it. This reduces distraction and focuses your attention on a particular topic or task by displaying it at a larger size.

  1. Make it visual! Most mind mapping programs include icons and simple graphics that you can insert to emphasize importance, delegate responsibilities, and display progress. You can also use boundaries and relationships to topics. Powerful mind mapping software programs, like MindManager 12 for Windows, allow you to add start dates and due dates to topics, to help organize your thought process and strategic planning.

  1. Filter your maps. Filtering permits many mind mapping programs to offer scheduling and project management capabilities. You can filter on the basis of keywords, dates, or icons. For example, you can hide all completed projects, or just display overdue projects, projects with upcoming deadlines, or only projects assigned to specific individuals.
  2. Take your mind maps with you. Mind mapping isn?t just for the desktop: Mobile versions of most mind mapping programs allow you to start projects and update them using your smartphones, iPads, and Android devices.

Sharing & collaborating ? Mind mapping trends

Mind maps are intended to be shared. You can export mind maps as static documents or, in some cases, as interactive PDFs. Reader programs are generally available to allow you to share your mind maps with those not currently using a mind mapping program.

More and more mind mapping programs are intended to be stored online, using proprietary cloud-based services, like Mindjet Connect or independent services such as Dropbox.

These services permit you to determine who has access to your stored maps and who can update them. You can also sync maps, so that the latest version of your project-planning templates or content marketing editorial calendar will always be available to your co-workers and clients.

Many mind mapping software programs permit you to track changes made by individual participants, and some even permit others to contribute to or update mind maps in real time. Many mind mapping software publishers, such as Mindjet, offer unlimited free versions of their software programs for iPhones, iPads, and Android devices.

Some powerful mind mapping programs, such as Mindo and iThoughts HD, are available for iPads for purchase at a fraction of the cost of equivalent desktop programs. These can create and export maps in formats that can be read by programs from other software publishers.

Cannabis withdrawal symptoms might have clinical importance

ScienceDaily (Sep. 26, 2012) ? Cannabis users have a greater chance of relapse to cannabis use when they experience certain withdrawal symptoms, according to research published Sep. 26 in the open access journal PLOS ONE led by David Allsop of the National Cannabis Prevention and Information Centre (NCPIC) at the University of New South Wales.

The authors tested a group of dependent cannabis users over a two week period of abstinence for impairment related to their withdrawal symptoms. Findings were correlated with the probability of relapse to cannabis use during the abstinence period, and the level of use one month later.

They found that in more dependent users, certain withdrawal symptoms, such as physical tension, sleep problems, anxiety, depression, mood swings and loss of appetite, were more strongly associated with relapse than other symptoms, such as hot flashes, fatigue, or night sweats. Participants with greater dependence before the abstinence attempt reported more severe impairment from the withdrawal. Participants with greater impairment from cannabis withdrawal consumed more cannabis during the month following the abstinence attempt.

If these results extend to treatment seeking cannabis users seeking treatment for withdrawal, the research may help improve counseling and treatment strategies for those looking for support.

"Tailoring treatments to target withdrawal symptoms contributing to functional impairment during a quit attempt may improve treatment outcomes" says Allsop.

In rare appearance, Germany's Kohl makes plea for European unity

BERLIN (Reuters) - Former Chancellor Helmut Kohl, who reunified Germany and pushed the country into the euro, urged Europe to press ahead with closer integration despite a crisis of the single currency, saying the continent must never again descend into conflict.

In a rare public appearance to mark 30 years since he became chancellor, Kohl was celebrated by party allies, an array of former presidents and prime ministers, as well as Angela Merkel, a former prot?g? with whom he has had a frosty relationship since she turned on him over a decade ago.

Frail since a fall in 2008 put him in the hospital for months, the 82-year old Kohl has remained largely silent through three years of euro turmoil, but on the occasions he has spoken out, he has voiced doubts about Merkel's handling of the crisis.

"Europe can never sink into war again," he told an audience at the German Historical Museum in Berlin. "We need to press ahead with the unification of Europe. Let's make good use of the time we have."

Before Kohl spoke, Merkel addressed the crowd, praising her former mentor's record but also defending her own approach to the crisis.

Merkel has demanded that struggling southern euro states introduce painful reforms in exchange for aid and talked tough with problem-countries like Greece. She has resisted pressure for "miracle solutions" like common euro zone bonds.

"The introduction of the euro was about stability and we feel an obligation here," she said. "We can't solve this crisis in one fell swoop. We need to take a considered approach."

Kohl was one of the towering European leaders of the second half of the 20th century. At the event on Thursday, he was praised in taped video tributes by former U.S. President George H.W. Bush, Britain's John Major, France's Edouard Balladur and Israel's Shimon Peres.

Yet his legacy has been recast, revised and redrawn many times over the past decades and its final chapter has probably not been written.

REUNIFICATION AND THE EURO

In Germany and abroad, he is celebrated as the father of German reunification, though his promise of "flourishing landscapes" in the east failed to materialize.

Kohl's other landmark achievement, pushing through the euro together with French President Francois Mitterrand, was hailed as a huge success in the currency's first decade. But it looks less glorious after three years of crisis that have raised the prospect of a catastrophic euro breakup.

Some in Germany now blame Kohl for pressing ahead with the euro without insisting on closer political and fiscal integration as a condition - a decision that Merkel has denounced publicly as an epic mistake.

Kohl's defenders point out that it was his successor as chancellor, Gerhard Schroeder, who allowed Greece into the bloc and watered down EU budget rules.

Another black mark on Kohl's record is the party funding scandal that soured his relationship with Merkel, whom he'd plucked from obscurity after the Berlin Wall fell and brought into his cabinet.

It was Merkel who engineered her party's break from Kohl, urging the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) to move on "without its old war horse" when the scandal erupted.

But enough time has now passed for both to have recognized the benefits of a rapprochement.

"This is an attempt at reconciliation," Gerd Langguth, a professor at Bonn University said of Thursday's event. "Both sides realize it is time for Kohl to return to the bosom of the party."

Merkel may also hope that bringing him back into the fold will help unify the CDU in the run-up to an election next year in which she will fight for a third term. Some believe the event may be the start of a rebranding of Merkel as a "great European" in the tradition of Kohl and Konrad Adenauer.

"So far, Merkel hasn't told the right story to the German people," a former minister in Kohl's cabinet who attended Thursday's event told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

"Her message has been that Germany is right and others in Europe must become like us. This will never happen. We cannot Germanize Europe. Kohl understands this. We can only hope this event is a sign that Merkel is beginning to realize that too."

In this interview by Singapore?s Energy Market Authority, Panasonic Asia Pacific managing director Yorihisa Shiokawa reveals how manufacturers can contribute to an energy efficient society through innovation, collaboration and careful management.

Energy Market Authority: Panasonic?s ambition is to be the leading ?Green Innovation Company? in the electronics sector. What steps is Panasonic undertaking to achieve this target? What impact will this have on consumers and the environment?

Yorihisa Shiokawa: We want to become the number one Green Innovation Company in the electronics sector by 2018. Through our ?eco ideas? strategy, we create innovative businesses, products and services that are energy-efficient or have smart energy features, and therefore are more environmentally-friendly. But they also help consumers save money. We are on track to achieving 80 per cent of our total sales in Asia Pacific from these eco products.

Panasonic Group is also focused on developing Total Energy Solutions that involve energy creation, storage, savings and management. We set up the Panasonic Energy Solutions Development Centre Singapore in July this year to develop total energy solutions not only for the region, but also to commercialise them globally. Panasonic is working closely with the local authorities in Singapore to test-bed some of our urban solutions at the?Punggol Eco-Town project.

We have a Panasonic Eco Learning Programme, which will help 200,000 students across Asia Pacific to develop environmental awareness and an understanding of how virtually zero CO2 emissions can be achieved through technology. We will continue to spread the word so that more will come together to create a positive impact on the environment.

Panasonic applies the ?eco ideas? strategy to our own business. We aim to reduce the environmental impact of our business operations by making the best use of resources and energy through green innovation. We have set a goal of a 600,000-tonne CO2 reduction in our operations versus a ?business-as-usual? level (based on our fiscal year ending March 2005).

We are also developing three more ?eco ideas? factories by March 2013, which will demonstrate our sustainability solutions and capabilities. These factories adopt green solutions and exemplify how reductions in CO2 emissions, managing waste generation and chemical substance releases and maintaining energy efficiency can be achieved in manufacturing facilities.

EMA: In difficult economic times, some consumers may not be inclined to pay for green-certified appliances. What role can global manufacturers play in raising the awareness of the importance of such appliances?

YS: Global manufacturers can take the lead to help imbue eco-consciousness among consumers though championing environmental awareness programmes and education initiatives. Industry players must work with governments worldwide to ensure their products are compliant with the energy regulations of each country. In Singapore, Panasonic?s air conditioners and refrigerators meet the standards which are required for The Energy Label, mandated by the National Environment Agency (NEA).

Asia Pacific also has many environmental challenges in emerging and rapidly growing markets. Economic growth can create environmental pressures ? especially in creating and providing a stable supply of energy and meeting the demand for improved living standards. Product customisation for particular markets is important. In India, for example, the CUBE air-conditioner takes into account specific Indian climatic conditions and space limitations. This kind of product customisation will encourage customers to purchase green-certified appliances.

EMA: Businesses, especially manufacturing companies, are some of the biggest consumers of energy. How do you think businesses can and should conserve energy through their own business practices?

YS: Business growth must be achieved with an eye on conserving the planet for future generations. We are committed to promoting environmental sustainability and reducing the impact of our business operations. There are two ways to achieve this:

First, look at reducing CO2 emission. Panasonic has been using meters and gauges to manage energy consumption during production, as well as replacing fluorescent lights with energy-efficient Light-Emitting Diode (LED) lights in our factories. By doing so, we have been able to reduce CO2 emissions by 560,000 tonnes in our Asia-Pacific operations as of the end March this year.

Second, companies should set assessment criteria on the environmental impact of their products. This needs to be done right from the planning and design stage. Improved environmental performance can be based on criteria such as energy savings, resource savings and chemicals management.

EMA: There is much being said about public-private partnerships in developing solutions that lower energy consumption. How have Japanese companies, for instance, collaborated with the Japanese government to help meet nationwide energy intensity goals?

YS: In Japan, such collaborations are increasingly important for a nation that is dependent on imports of virtually all fossil fuels. For decades, Japanese energy policy has focused on efficiency, diversity and development of indigenous energy sources.

One such recent project is Fujisawa City in Kanagawa Prefecture, situated about 50km west of Tokyo. This collaboration sees nine companies coming together with the government to build an innovative smart town deploying services and energy systems based on Panasonic?s ?eco ideas? for green lifestyles. The companies include developers, manufacturers and service providers and will see an eventual actual operation of the town with about 1,000 households. The smart town is to be built on the vacant lot of Panasonic?s former factory site and is targeted to open in the fiscal year ending in March 2014.

Apart from these large-scale collaborations, there are other ways to contribute to the nation, especially in times of crisis. At the end of March 2011, Panasonic donated a Life Innovation Container to the Miyagi Prefecture, which suffered widespread devastation in the Great East Japan Earthquake. The container is a standalone power system equipped with solar panels and rechargeable batteries to deliver electricity to areas without access to electricity.

But such collaborations are picking up in other parts of Asia as well. For example in Singapore, we are partnering with the Housing Development Board (HDB), Energy Market Authority (EMA) and Economic Development Board (EDB) to test-bed total energy solutions on an existing public residential building in Punggol Eco-Town. This project aims to achieve zero CO2 emissions for common areas of public housing in Singapore, and provide residents with a complete total energy solutions package that helps monitor and better manage their energy consumption.

EMA: Do you think companies can combine making contributions to the environment with business growth? Do you think legislation, such as those enacted in Japan and soon to be enacted in Singapore, will push companies to be more energy-efficient?

YS: Our belief is that we must integrate environmental conservation with business growth.? As such, we strive to achieve the highest achievement levels in reducing CO2 emissions, recycling resources, the size of our energy systems business and the sales ratio of environmentally-friendly products. These are our ?Green Indexes? and they are just as important as our Global Excellence Indexes, which look at sales, operating profit and return of equity.

Legislation also has a role to play in driving mindset changes in energy consumption and the nation?s energy mix.? In July 2012, the Japanese government rolled out feed-in tariffs (FiTs) for renewable energy. The Japanese FiTs are significantly higher than those offered in both Germany and China. Such clean energy investments shift Japan?s reliance on nuclear energy. Government subsidies benefit solar panel makers such as Panasonic, spurring them to manufacture even more energy-efficient products and services.

We also applaud the Singapore government for introducing the Energy Conservation Act, which comes into effect in 2013, to improve energy efficiency across different sectors. It will also drive energy efficiency in business. The legislation requires factories that consume more than 15GWh of energy a year to implement minimum energy management standards, such as the appointment of an energy manager, reporting of energy use and submission of energy efficiency improvement plans.

This is likely to help households make more informed choices about purchasing energy-efficient appliances since the legislation stipulates the minimum energy performance standards and energy labelling scheme for common household appliances such as air-conditioners and refrigerators.

Yorihisa Shiokawa is Managing Executive Officer, Regional Head for the Asia Pacific, Middle East & Africa of Panasonic Corporation, as well as Managing Director of Panasonic Asia Pacific. Report: Sharp increases layoffs number, aiming for profitability by March 2014

Report Sharp cutting 11,000 jobs, 19% of its workforce, by March 2014

Japanese electronics giant Sharp is reportedly planning a major restructuring to bring the company back to profitability by 2014, as reported by Kyodo News. Said restructuring will see Sharp cut nearly 11,000 (10,966) jobs from its 57,170-person workforce by March 2014 -- just under 20 percent of all employees -- and sell off various assets, resulting in ¥213.1 billion ($2.7 billion) of much needed capital from lenders. Named assets to be sold include international manufacturing plants, and shares in other Japanese electronics company, Toshiba. The company also plans on shuttering its international manufacturing plants, as well as once again cutting employee wages.

So, what's gonna save Sharp from more turmoil? A rethinking of its LCD TV business, apparently, as well as a "strengthening" of the company's smartphone LCD offerings. Sharp's also moving away from solar batteries, selling off its US-based solar firm Recurrent Energy LLC. Company prez Takashi Okuda will head up the massive restructuring, leading an "emergency management committee" starting in October. All of this adds up to Sharp expecting a return to profitability by next April. You'll forgive us if we're a bit wary of that prediction, but our best wishes are with those impacted by the chaos.

O2 UK to sell upcoming HTC flagship phone without charger

If you're anything like us, you'll have plenty of wall chargers left over from devices you've long since parted company with. Observe above, the battered husk of our two and a half year-old HTC Desire charger, still in service today. Knowing that many older chargers are still in use, O2 UK and HTC have decided to take a radical step to cut down on waste, and presumably save a bit of cash at the same time. 

The two are to offer an upcoming, unnamed HTC flagship device with a microUSB cable, but no charger, in an effort to improve their green credentials. The operator claims that 70 percent of all phone buyers already have a "relevant charger" at home. And according to a report on UK tech site Pocket-Lint this morning, O2 and HTC are serious about this latest endeavor.

"I have a simple vision for O2: we want to take chargers out of boxes full stop," said Ronan Dunne, CEO of O2. "Right now, O2 with HTC has to go it alone on this matter - we both believe in it passionately enough that we can’t wait for the industry as a whole to join us in this crusade. That said, we hope that we will be able to pave the way for others to follow us as this has to be a collective effort if we are to achieve the bigger aim of eliminating chargers sold with every new phone in the UK."

We're all for cutting down on unnecessary waste, but from our perspective, the most interesting thing about this story is that it tacitly confirms that we're due a new HTC flagship in the weeks ahead, and that O2 will offer it. The fact that the device itself is unnamed suggests it's yet to be announced -- possibilities include the rumored One X+ and One X 5. We'll be watching with interest to see what devices emerge from HTC and O2 as 2012 draws to a close.

AP IMPACT: Tragedy meant big money for NY minister

(AP) ? Before the Sept. 11 attacks, the Rev. Carl Keyes was a little-known pastor of a small New York City congregation searching for members and money.

When the twin towers fell, his fortunes changed.

Donors poured $2.5 million into the minister's charity to help 9/11 victims. More opportunities to raise relief money would come later, with at least another $2.3 million collected for efforts along the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, in the poorest corners of West Virginia and Tennessee, and even in remote African villages.

Tens of millions more flowed through his fingers from the sale of church properties.

But Keyes, a one-time construction worker, did more than help the needy with the millions donated ? he helped himself.

According to financial records, internal correspondence and interviews with former employees conducted by The Associated Press, Keyes blurred the lines between his charities, his ministry and his personal finances while promoting himself as an international humanitarian:

? Keyes diverted large sums donated for 9/11 and Hurricane Katrina into his cash-starved church, then used charity and church money to pay hundreds of thousands of dollars in personal credit card bills and other debts, documents show.

? He failed for years to file required federal and state reports showing how much money his charities received and spent.

? He used large church donations from a wealthy supporter to pay his sons' private college tuition.

? The minister used a big donation meant for one of his charities to clear a mortgage on his family's house, according to an accountant who told Keyes he was quitting, in part because of the transaction.

? And, when his congregation sold its 19th-century church in midtown Manhattan for $31 million, he and his friends benefited.

For example, $950,000 of the proceeds was used to buy his family a country home near the Delaware River in New Jersey. Another $1 million went to support one of his charities, which spent more on failed, lavish fundraisers than on promised programs in Africa.

After paying large debts and buying a building to convert into a new church, the congregation had $13.8 million in cash, according to a February 2008 financial document obtained by the AP. Three years later, it told a court it had to sell that building because only $180,486 remained in its bank account.

The AP first wrote about Keyes and his charities last year, and as the AP expanded its investigation into the minister's operation, the New York attorney general's office opened its own probe. In a recent legal filing, the attorney general's office said it was investigating how the church had used its assets, amid concerns about its "ability (to) properly ... oversee its financial affairs." The church, Glad Tidings Tabernacle, has agreed to cooperate with the state investigation triggered by AP's reporting.

Relatively few people know of Keyes' charities ? Urban Life Ministries and Aid for the World. But his story offers a disturbing glimpse into how some nonprofits manage to largely avoid scrutiny and keep finances secret, even while raising substantial amounts of money in the name of tragedy. It's also a story about what can happen to the money of well-meaning donors eager to open their hearts and wallets in the wake of devastation.

Keyes and his lawyer say all payments by his church and charities were proper.

"Sorry that you don't have a real 'story' here, but the truth is actually quite boring since no one did anything wrong," his lawyer, Jennifer Polovetsky, said in an email to the AP on Aug. 22.

"It must be underscored that Carl Keyes is an internationally recognized humanitarian who has spent the past 30 years helping others in crisis," she wrote in an earlier letter. "He has worked with many presidents and prime ministers around the world to help ease the suffering of their people."

RAISING DOLLARS AND DOUBTS

There is no question that Keyes has thrown himself into relief work.

Yet in promoting himself as a globe-trotting Samaritan, Keyes embellished his exploits and took credit for others' labor, according to several people who worked on relief efforts in lower Manhattan.

After 9/11, his charity provided food, water and counseling for recovery workers. But a priest disputed Keyes' colorful stories about breaking into locked churches for shelter near ground zero.

And in response to AP's questions about a claim that his ground zero soup kitchen had attracted celebrity volunteers like Jerry Seinfeld and actress Susan Sarandon, Keyes acknowledged that they never worked with him.

When Hurricane Katrina struck four years later, Keyes did drive to Mississippi to set up a massive volunteer operation and to help distribute supplies.

But Keyes has yet to account for how his organization raised and spent money on the Gulf Coast ? more than $800,000 by one estimate.

For a decade, Keyes operated his Urban Life Ministries charity without filing the required state and federal reports showing how much money it received and spent, an AP examination of official records found. The IRS last year stripped the charity of its tax-exempt status because Keyes failed to submit annual financial disclosures to verify that the money had been used for charitable purposes.

Keyes ran Aid for the World, which boasted of operating anti-poverty programs in the U.S. and on several continents, for more than three years without disclosing its finances as required. That meant there was no accounting of the charity's biggest event, a black-tie fundraiser featuring former U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell. The charity only recently recorded more than a half-million dollars in fundraising expenses for 2009; a significant portion of the money was spent on the Powell event.

Only after the AP contacted Keyes was an accountant hired to review his charities' finances over the past decade and to file all the required tax disclosure forms.

For Keyes, it's always been about the good works he can do through a selfless ministry, his supporters say.

"He was and remains a tremendous source of strength for those in need," Mike Martelli, a retired New York City police officer, wrote in a letter vouching for Keyes. Their 9/11 volunteer work was featured in a 2006 documentary, "The Cross and the Towers."

Good works aside, it is the way Keyes has handled millions of dollars entrusted to him and the benefits that he, his church and others received that has led his own accountants to accuse him of self-dealing and forgery ? accusations that have followed him since his early days as an Assemblies of God minister.

CONTINUING THE FIGHT

Before he became known for disaster relief, Keyes says he endured a troubled youth, struggling with an abusive father and his own violent nature.

"I have been looking for a fight my whole life," Keyes, a stout man with longish, graying hair, said in a December 2007 sermon. "People would give me a dollar just to see me punch some guy, and I would do it."

Born in 1956, Keyes spent much of his life in New Jersey's middle-class neighborhoods. By the late 1970s, he was organizing Ultimate Frisbee and other youth sports in a part-time job in Ocean City, a family-friendly Jersey beach town. That's where Keyes met Donna Jones, another recreation department employee who would marry him and later serve as his co-pastor.

Keyes also describes a dark side ? drug use when he was still in Little League and a life of crime by his early 20s. Jesus came later, he says, after the threat of prison time.

In one essay, he wrote that he abruptly quit drugs in 1982 after a religious conversion during a trip to Maine. He says his brother was less fortunate, dying of a suspected drug overdose in Atlantic City.

Keyes left that life in 1989, he says, when he moved his wife and two infant sons to work for a church in Brooklyn's impoverished Bushwick neighborhood.

But when he split from that ministry in 1997, its leaders accused him in a lawsuit of trying to loot assets on the way out, including a house in Pennsylvania's Poconos that the church had purchased two years earlier for $89,500. Records show that Keyes transferred ownership of the house to himself, then used the property as collateral for a $70,343 personal loan. He later argued in court filings that the money covered expenses for his new ministry. He claimed he was entitled to the house because the church bought it for his family and he had been making monthly reimbursement payments.

The church said in a lawsuit that Keyes stole the house, and a Brooklyn judge gave it back to the church in October 1998.

That same year, Keyes was hired as pastor of Glad Tidings Tabernacle, a nearly century-old congregation housed in an even older brick church wedged between Manhattan high-rises.

Keyes' brought part of his old flock from Brooklyn with him, but the newly merged congregation struggled financially. In mid-2001, church leaders had to borrow $543,500 for repairs and renovations.

Then came 9/11 ? and money would no longer be an issue. In just over a year, more than $2.5 million gushed into Keyes' church and a nonprofit organization he controlled, Urban Life Ministries.

After the terrorist attacks, Keyes applied for tax-exempt status for the charity, listing "relief programs in times of crises" as one of its purposes.

Urban Life Ministries spent much of its windfall on things like bottled water, food and a counseling center for ground zero workers, according to financial records obtained by the AP. The charity staged two concerts, including one honoring U.S. troops at the Yankees minor league ballpark on Staten Island. The nonprofit also provided apartments near ground zero for its workers, including Keyes and his family.

Financial records show that Keyes also spent money donated for 9/11 relief on expenses that had nothing to do with the tragedy ? a series of monthly payments of $734.99 on the personal loan he owed on the Poconos house; $5,000 for a church organ; and nearly $33,000 for an architect working on church renovations that would include a new living space for his family.

Urban Life Ministries said in recently filed audited financial statements that it also paid as much as $235,600 in "rent" to the church in late 2001 and 2002. It also donated $70,000 to the church and lent it at least another $26,953, according to Urban Life Ministries accounting ledgers, obtained by the AP.

Charities generally must use donations for the purpose stated when the money is raised. And charity operators must avoid using money to help themselves or causes that are not related to their mission.

Keyes, through his lawyer, said the rent and other payments were proper.

STORIES OF SUCCESS ABOUND

Keyes tells compelling stories about his charity's work, even if others say some of them are not true.

During a 2010 speech to the New Canaan Society, Keyes told how he had jumped into action after the 9/11 attacks: breaking into a closed Navy port on Staten Island to set up a site for relief supplies; obtaining phony security badges for volunteers so they could slip into the disaster zone with ease; and going door to door to rescue 600 pets stranded in Battery Park City apartments.

He described taking control of two Roman Catholic churches in lower Manhattan needed for shelters after the towers collapsed. "I couldn't find a Catholic anywhere. The churches were closed. So the doors miraculously opened after we prayed and hit it with a hammer," Keyes said.

Yet St. Peter's Church, one of the two Keyes cited, was open that day, made famous as the place where firefighters carried the body of the Rev. Mychal Judge, a Fire Department Catholic chaplain killed in the lobby of the north tower.

"I don't think it's true, this whole story," the Rev. Kevin Madigan, the church's senior priest, said of Keyes' version.

There was no break-in on Staten Island, either, said retired New York police Capt. Edward Reuss, who helped oversee staging of relief services there.

And 1,000 pets were rescued in Battery Park City, but that was handled by the city's parks department, according to representatives of several animal rescue groups involved. They said they never heard of Keyes.

Keyes also had said he set up a respite center in "The Green Tarp," a canteen that fed thousands of ground zero workers. But the Green Tarp was set up and run by celebrity chef David Bouley.

Questioned about those claims, Keyes told the AP he had only used the spot as a staging area for deliveries months after Bouley left, and that his workers had slipped in and out through an unlocked back door. He acknowledged that he hadn't been involved in any break-in on Staten Island, but said he once suggested the idea in a telephone conversation.

As for breaking into Catholic churches, Keyes said he stands by his statement. But he added that the chaos of 9/11 makes it "impossible for any individual to accurately remember what happened at what time on what day and by whom."

While promoting his charitable work, Keyes also has claimed support from presidents and other dignitaries. Keyes' lawyer told the AP that before Colin Powell agreed to speak at a 2009 fundraiser, the retired four-star general researched Keyes' background going back 30 years.

"General Powell and his staff found Mr. Keyes to be an upstanding individual with an exemplary record of service to the citizens of the world," Polovetsky wrote to AP.

That came as a surprise to Powell, who said he had never looked into Keyes' background. "I don't know how they spend their money or manage their finances."

ACCOUNTANTS COMPLAIN

Some of the most serious complaints about Keyes' financial practices come from his former accountants. Several who used to work for Keyes said that as donors poured money into Keyes' Urban Life Ministries, he raided its accounts to help himself and his church.

One accountant filed complaints in 2008 with New York state tax officials and the New York attorney general accusing Keyes of misusing Hurricane Katrina donations.

"Not only was this (nonprofit) plundered to fund the operating deficits of the church, the amounts were spent on personal items of the pastor's family, and thus were items of taxable income," wrote Bruce Kowal, an accountant who worked for Keyes between 2003 and 2006.

Kowal attached bank records to the complaint, obtained by the AP, that he said showed Urban Life Ministries paid some of Keyes' personal expenses, including his American Express bills; a $349.23 monthly lease on a car his sons used while attending a private college in Florida; a $130 monthly payment on a storage unit near their school; and payments toward the personal loan Keyes owed on the Poconos property.

Urban Life Ministries gave more money to Glad Tidings Tabernacle, including $12,000 to pay overdue employment taxes for church staff and $40,000 for other costs.

Kowal said in the complaint that Glad Tidings church money was used to pay more than $73,000 in 2004 and 2005 for other personal credit card bills on Keyes' behalf without providing the required proof that they were legitimate church expenses for him and his wife.

"I had repeatedly admonished the pastors that these actions were possibly illegal, and that the remedy was the repayment of all amounts diverted from (the charity), as well as amending the personal income tax returns of the pastors to reflect the personal items paid for," he wrote.

Kowal accused Keyes of forging a former church employee's name on Urban Life Ministries' checks. He said the worker, Adam Babcock, had left seven months earlier.

Babcock reviewed the signature on one check for the AP, and said it wasn't his. He also said he never signed checks while working for Keyes.

The state Department of Taxation and Finance would have referred Kowal's complaint to the state attorney general's office, said finance spokesman Edward Harris. The attorney general's office declined to comment specifically on what happened to it.

Keyes referred questions to his lawyer, Polovetsky, who declined to discuss the check signatures. She said the storage unit, the leased car and other expenditures were legitimate expenses of Urban Life Ministries. She said the storage unit was "used to store equipment and supplies connected to ULM relief efforts."

Michael Messner, who had served as a business manager for the church, also questioned payments to Keyes' credit card in 2008. Messner asked in an email to David Cushworth, another accountant, if Keyes had provided receipts showing that his credit card charges were for church purposes. A church financial statement at the time showed $205,767 in credit card expenses.

"The ugly fact remains that Carl never did an accounting for his expenditures," Cushworth wrote.

Polovetsky said in a written response to the AP that "all church financial transactions were approved by the executive board." She said a newly hired accountant, John Shall, had reviewed the transactions after the AP contacted Keyes.

Without specifying whether Shall's review had uncovered financial problems, Polovetsky wrote, "Any required taxes were paid."

Kowal's complaint also accused Keyes of getting a wealthy supporter to help pay his sons' college tuitions with large church donations that could be claimed as tax deductions, which is not allowed. One $15,000 donation to the church was made in December 2005, and paid in two $7,500 checks a month later to the private college, according to the complaint.

Keyes acknowledged subsequent tuition payments in an email on May 31, 2007, in which he told another accountant to send church money to one of his sons for tuition because the donor "just gave me the money on Sunday and their tuition is late."

Polovetsky declined to discuss the donor's contributions and the tuition payments.

MISSING TAX FILINGS

After the AP began investigating, Keyes filed eight years of tax forms for Urban Life Ministries and three years for Aid for the World.

But the records raise more questions.

Urban Life Ministries has taken credit for working on hundreds of storm-damaged homes on Mississippi's Gulf Coast, providing food and housing for thousands of volunteers, and setting up a massive relief depot. Yet the organization's tax filings claim it received only $266,000 in donations from 2005 to 2008.

"That doesn't sound right to me at all. Not even close," said Keyes' brother-in-law, Mark Jones, who managed most of the charity's work in Biloxi.

Jones said he had provided Keyes with bank statements and other financial records last year showing that the group spent at least $800,000 from 2006 through part of 2009.

Polovetsky said Urban Life Ministry's tax filings do not show financial activity from the Gulf Coast relief work because money went through ULM Relief, a separate corporate entity set up by Keyes and Jones.

There is a Mississippi corporation with that name, but Jones said it never obtained tax-exempt status from the IRS. The organization relied on Urban Life Ministries to handle donations so contributors could claim tax deductions, he said.

"The only tax ID I've ever used was for Urban Life Ministries," Jones said.

Urban Life Ministries' newly filed IRS forms also contain no trace of a $135,000 donation made by real estate agent Karen Dome, who helped Keyes sell Glad Tidings' church for $31 million on Dec. 31, 2007. Court documents and financial records indicate that Dome received a $1.39 million commission; she told the AP she regularly gives 10 percent of her commission to charity.

On Feb. 19, 2008, Cushworth, then Urban Life Ministries' accountant, emailed Keyes a resignation letter in which he accused the minister of using the Dome donation to pay off a second mortgage on a house Keyes owned in Manasquan, N.J., on the Jersey Shore.

"If the New York attorney general were to ever find out, then goodness knows the kind of trouble you and the church could be in, never mind the IRS or the feds," Cushworth wrote.

Dome told the AP she had given the money to the charity, not to Keyes, because she was impressed with its relief work.

The AP confirmed through public property records that the mortgage, which had a balance of $131,973, was discharged in early January 2008, but could not independently obtain records verifying Cushworth's claim that Urban Life Ministries' money was used to make that payment.

Polovetsky refused to answer questions about whether the charity had paid off Keyes' mortgage, other than to say that all transactions were approved by its executive board. She added that Cushworth "was subsequently fired for incompetence and should not be deemed credible."

CASHING OUT

When the dwindling congregation at Glad Tidings Tabernacle sold its big, crumbling Manhattan home in 2007, church leaders spent some of the $31 million on Keyes and a few of his supporters, according to real estate and other financial records.

The church gave Keyes $200,000 in back pay and distributed $670,000 in "tithes," according to a financial statement recently provided to the attorney general's office by the church. It didn't disclose the recipients, but other records obtained by the AP show that Abraham Fenton, a pastor who served on the Urban Life Ministries board, received $100,000. Don Barnett, another longtime Keyes friend who has served on boards of Keyes' two charities, had $35,965 paid to seven personal credit card accounts. "Thank you for lifting me up out of this pit," Barnett wrote in a note of gratitude.

Fenton said he later returned the money. Barnett did not return phone and email messages.

The Keyes family also bought a house. In December 2008, the church lent Keyes' wife $950,000 to buy an 18th century stone-and-clapboard house on seven wooded acres in Stockton, N.J., a Delaware River community about 70 miles southwest of New York City, property records show.

Seven months later, the loan was declared "paid or otherwise satisfied" and Donna Keyes owned the house outright, the records show. Three months after that, the Keyes couple used the house as collateral to borrow $520,000.

It isn't clear from public documents whether the Keyes family paid off the Glad Tidings loan, or if the church forgave the debt. Polovetsky declined to say.

She said the transaction had been approved by the church board, and that by living outside the city, the Keyes family had saved the church "a significant amount of money." One longtime Glad Tidings board member, Louis Delgado, confirmed that the board had wanted the Keyes family to enjoy a nice house, but said he understood the church would own the property, and that it would be available to future pastors.

After selling off its original church home in midtown, Glad Tidings paid $11.5 million for a town house in the chic Tribeca neighborhood of Manhattan and began converting it into a place of worship, transaction records show. Glad Tidings began 2008 with $13.8 million in savings.

Three years later, the church told a court it owed contractors and others nearly $2 million, had only $180,484 left in cash, and needed to sell the Tribeca building.

Under New York law, church property sales require court approval.

In its recent disclosures to the attorney general's office, the church said it spent $8.7 million on the never-completed renovation, more than double the amount it had initially told a court it planned to spend.

The church sold the Tribeca building last year for $9 million, $2.5 million less than what it had paid.

In exchange for the church's Aug. 14 agreement to cooperate in the ongoing investigation, the attorney general's office agreed not to block release of $4.5 million in proceeds remaining from the Tribeca sale so the church could buy a new home in Harlem.

KEYES: DONE WITH DISASTER WORK

Keyes says disaster and devastation have taken their toll. He's no longer a full-time pastor of Glad Tidings. His wife leads the church.

He and some volunteers recently helped build a home in Pennsylvania for victims of sex trafficking.

On his website, Keyes said he is "working with struggling towns and cities to write a screenplay and shoot a film in order to lift them out of poverty." He wrote that movie stars would be involved, and that the "lofty venture" would "result in the actual turnaround" of the yet-to-be-selected town.

Also, within the last year, Keyes has been on eBay selling a special coffee from Africa named after his Aid for the World charity. In its most recent financial disclosure report, that charity stated it owed $1 million to Glad Tidings and $300,000 to Keyes.

Keyes insists he's done with disasters, mostly because he says 9/11 and Katrina cost him, physically and emotionally. He was once lean and athletic. Now he struggles with his weight, at one point last year topping 400 pounds.

"I would never go back to relief work again, even if you pay me," he says. "It was a circus."
