MONDAY MOTIVATION - Take-Aways on Self Improvement

I just returned from attending a national leadership convention for my job - in Washington, DC!? I had a great time, and my mind was FILLED with such amazing stuff.? I wanted to share some of the things I learned with you.

The keynote speaker was Robin Sharma, an expert in Leadership development.? He was phenomenal!

A few of my "take-aways" that I thought might be beneficial to anyone and everyone:

"Small daily improvements lead to stunning results!"? I really believe this is true, whether the improvements happen in your relationships, your body, your mind, or your spiritual self.

"Leaders love education."? This is one of the things I've started to take to heart lately - I'm trying to spend time each day improving myself.? This just makes you a better person.

"Work like Picasso painted!"? Wow, what a visual thing.? I would expand this to say "LIVE like Picasso painted"!? Be the best at what you do!

"If people aren't calling you crazy and laughing at you every week, you aren't dreaming BIG enough!"? IF there was one really important thing I learned, this was it.? My dreams have to be WAY bigger than they are.? If I want to look good, I can do it.? If I want to feel better, it's possible.? If I want to make enough money to pay my house off - NO problem.? I just have to dream it, and then set about making it happen!

Violence rages in Syria's Aleppo: rights group

Violence raged in Syria's second city Aleppo for the six consecutive day, as regular troops battled rebel forces, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The monitoring group reported at least 19 people killed in violence on Wednesday, the majority of them civilians, a day after 158 people died across the country.

The Britain-based watchdog also reported clashes in the district of Hajar al-Aswad in Damascus, one of the last remaining rebel bastions in the capital, 10 days after fighting broke out there.

Regime forces used helicopter gunships and heavy machinegun fire to pound the embattled southern neighbourhood, as they tried to "reclaim" it, the Observatory said.

In Aleppo, clashes raged in the central Al-Jamaliya neighbourhood, close to the local headquarters of the ruling Baath party. In Kalasseh, in the south of the city, rebels set fire to a police station, the Observatory said.

Fighter jets overflew the city, breaking the sound barrier but not carrying out bombing raids, Observatory director Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP.

In the province of Aleppo, regime forces pounded the rebel-held town of Al-Bab, killing one civilian.

Elsewhere in the country, security forces continued to fight with prisoners at the central prison in Homs, after a mutiny that saw detainees take over a wing.

The Observatory said security service agents and regular troops took part in the operation, which left several "dead and wounded."

The mutiny broke out last week, and was followed by a similar revolt in Aleppo's central prison.

Also in the central city of Homs -- a symbol of Syria's 16-month uprising -- a rebel fighter was shot dead by a sniper in the Al-Qarabis district, the Observatory said, adding that regime forces were firing an average of "three shells every 15 minutes."

Amateur video posted on YouTube by activists showed people taking refuge underground in Boueida, in Homs province. They said they were sheltering from shelling by pro-government militiamen.

In the northwestern province of Idlib, six civilians -- including a woman and a child -- were killed by shelling and gunfire in Kfar Roma.

And in Hama province, 16 people were killed in an army assault on the village of Sharia, while two children were killed in dawn shelling of the town of Karnaz.

In Qalaat al-Madiq in the same province, a couple and their two children were killed as they tried to flee shelling in their village.

A video distributed by the Observatory showed grisly footage of the bodies of the family members, shrapnel tearing open the faces of the children and ripping open the head of their father.

The group put the updated toll for violence across the country on Tuesday at 158 dead -- 114 civilians, 31 Syrian soldiers and 13 rebel fighters.

It is impossible to independently verify death counts from Syria.

Uzbekistan?s Balancing Act With China: A View From the Ground

The exact reasons for Uzbekistan?s decision to withdraw from the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) at the end of June remain unclear (Xinhua, June, 29;?Russia Today, June 28, 2012). However, while Tashkent seems to have soured on the Russian-led regional organization, President Islam Karimov took time in June to pay a state visit to Beijing that included attending the Chinese instigated Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). In addition to attending the SCO Summit, President Karimov held separate bilateral meetings with President Hu Jintao, signed a strategic partnership agreement and approved a raft of new measures to strengthen Sino-Uzbek relations (Gov.uz, June 8; Xinhua, June 7). At this high level, relations are clearly moving in a positive direction. The view from the ground, however, is far more complex with Uzbekistan?s traditional vision of itself as a regional powerhouse and industrial power potentially at odds with China?s growing influence in Central Asia.

A Strategic Partner

The main public take-away from the June 2012 Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit in Beijing was the organization?s decision to admit Afghanistan as ?observer? member and Turkey as ?dialogue partner? (Xinhua, June 7). When taken alongside the news that China and Afghanistan were to upgrade relations to a strategic partnership, the main international focus was on what this might mean for China?s future involvement in the war-torn country. This news story somewhat overshadowed the other big announcement to emerge on the fringes of the SCO Summit, the bilateral meeting between President Islam Karimov and President Hu Jintao during which the leaders signed a ?Joint Declaration on the Establishment of Strategic Partnership Relations? (Xinhua, June 8). This came in the wake of a visit to Tashkent by General Chen Bingde, Chief of People?s Liberation Army (PLA) General Staff, who paid a bilateral visit to the capital during a regional trip that culminated in a pre-Summit meeting of military heads to plan future joint military exercises (Xinhua, June 4;?PLA Daily, June 4). Although these sorts of regional summits and meetings are often more notable for the empty statements that are produced, the signals sent are loud and clear when read within the context of Uzbekistan?s regional diplomacy.

Karimov?s very presence at the summit was important, given that he makes a point of not attending similar Russian-sponsored summits or other multilateral get-togethers. ?Tashkent?s foreign policy is fiercely?independent?something emphasized in the decision to withdraw from the CSTO, where Uzbekistan had long resisted a number of the largely Russian instigated efforts to deepen integration. Consequently, the combination of President Karimov?s attendance at the SCO summit, the military meetings prior and the signing of a formal strategic partnership most likely signals genuine intent. ?While the strategic partnership agreement itself covers areas from military exchanges to tourism programs, it is Uzbekistan?s willingness to allow China more access to its economy that stands out most. ?Plans call for the development of joint special economic zones and greater Chinese involvement in the natural resource extraction, aviation and transportation sectors (Xinhua, June 3; September 23, 2011).

Even within the SCO, while Uzbekistan is resistant to get too involved at a military level, it still has permitted the establishment of the SCO Regional Anti-Terrorism Structure (RATS) in the capital Tashkent. Opened on January 1, 2004 and headed by an Uzbek Major General, RATS has an executive committee of officials drawn from each member state?s Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Interior Affairs or State Security (RATS SCO, November 30, 2004) [1]. While it is hard to discern how active the institution is, local analysts highlight its presence as significant within the context of Uzbekistan?s independent streak [2]. This is not to overplay Uzbekistan?s involvement of course?Tashkent has so far refused to participate in anything but an observer role in the biannual ?Peace Mission? joint exercises (Eurasia Daily Monitor, June 19).

Beyond the SCO there are further tensions visible between China and Uzbekistan on security affairs. According to Tashkent-based analysts, the Uzbek government does not always feel that Beijing shares its concerns about international terrorism. The implication is that, while Uzbekistan views terrorism as a potentially existential threat, China considers it a secondary concern [3]. Furthermore, when focusing on Afghanistan, the main regional security challenge, Uzbekistan prefers to focus its relations and efforts at a bilateral level. This allows the country to concentrate its efforts through preferred local partners, such as Uzbek-Afghan general Rashid Dostum, rather than work at a government level. Relations between Kabul and Tashkent are currently on an awkward footing?something explained to the authors as the consequence of a high-level spat between leaders [4].

Investment at Arms Length

Tensions between China and Uzbekistan are also visible at a bilateral investment level. Uzbekistan boasts the only real manufacturing base in Central Asia and is protective of its factories and labor force. ?According to several local businessmen who worked both with China and other countries, high tariffs are levied against many imported consumer goods with Chinese goods often targeted in particular [5]. ?Mid-level?entrepreneurs?interviewed and seen in Tashkent seemed to be doing a brisk trade in Chinese-made products that were modified or assembled in Uzbekistan to mask their origin. In contrast, large-scale Chinese imports or rentals of equipment?such as heavy machinery, agricultural and transport equipment?are encouraged as a way to boost Uzbekistan?s production [6].

Recent high-level meetings also have focused on Tashkent?s plans to reroute more of its natural gas, traditionally exported through Russia, into the China-Central Asia pipeline. During the recent meeting in Beijing, the two sides were reportedly ?energetic and enthusiastic about the project,? though foreign observers have questioned the viability of some of the numbers being spoken about (Gov.uz, June 8 ) [7]. In particular, it is not entirely clear how they will achieve exports of 10 billion cubic meters to China in 2013 without missing quotas for export elsewhere or domestic demand (Reuters, May 17). One possible alternative being explored is the deepening of bilateral cooperation between China and Uzbekistan on solar energy and solar furnaces. Reportedly, the two sides have signed a bilateral memorandum of understanding to go into joint production [8]. In August 2011, the Xinjiang Garson Sun Wind Power Technology Company opened an office in Uzbekistan, part of a larger regional push (China Daily, August 16, 2011). A Chinese firm, the Holley Group, also have agreed to work with Uzbek partners to upgrade the Uzbek metering system (MeteringChina.com, June 14). Beyond energy, China has provided some infrastructure development in Uzbekistan, with China Road and Bridge Company (CRBC) participating in road projects alongside South Korean firm Posco (UzDaily.com, April 9).

Although this paints a picture of enhanced cooperation?and one that is seemingly deepening in the wake of the recent bilateral meetings between President Hu and President Karimov?there is an undercurrent of uncertainty. Chinese firms, while clearly present in Uzbekistan, have a relatively low visibility and encounter the same difficulties getting profits out of the country as other foreign firms. One way around this is to reinvest the profits generated from selling back office technology into the country, something that Huawei and ZTE?two of China?s largest telecommunications companies?currently are doing to make handsets in Uzbekistan.

From an Uzbek perspective, the priority is clearly to maintain a manufacturing base while living close to the world?s factory, China. Uzbeks have watched as neighboring states Kyrgyzstan and Kazakhstan slowly have found themselves overly dependent on China and are wary of falling into a similar position [9]. There is some evidence of this already taking place in Uzbekistan. One example given to the authors was that cotton packaging had been altered to meet Chinese demands specifically?something Beijing was able to impose because they are the largest consumers of Uzbek cotton [10]. Some in the country, however, have highlighted the potential for the state to profit from China?s increasing labor costs. Uzbekistan?s relatively developed manufacturing base, educated workforce and good infrastructure offer themselves as good alternatives. During a speech in Tashkent July 2011, World Bank Senior Vice President and Chief Economist Justin Yifu Lin spoke of Uzbekistan being in an excellent position to profit from the fact that countries like China, India and Brazil were slowly moving up the value chain (Blogs.worldbank.org, July 13, 2011). Foreign diplomats interviewed mentioned how they were taking business delegations around the country and at least one textile firm apparently was considering moving its manufacturing from China to Uzbekistan [11].

East Asian Balancing

Uzbekistan?s most prominent East Asian investment partner, however, is not China but South Korea. ?With over $10 billion in total direct investment (as opposed to just over $5 billion from China), South Korea may not have the same geopolitical clout as China, but the relationship allows Tashkent to avoid relying too much on China and Russia (Korea Times, June 6). The partnership began just after independence with familial and small business links between the Soviet Koreans of Uzbekistan and their counterparts on the Korean peninsula. ?It further blossomed into high-level investment partnerships and close personal ties between President Karimov and a succession of South Korean presidents. ?It is not uncommon for Uzbeks who emigrate to find jobs and business opportunities in South Korea and the government in?Seoul?has provided direct aid?often linked to investment projects?to Uzbekistan (Korea Times, February 10, 2010).?When driving through Navoiy Province in southern Uzbekistan, newly paved roads lead to a prominent cargo airport and to new factories and office buildings of the sprawling special economic zone developed by Korean companies as part of a Korean-Uzbek partnership.

Uzbek analysts and officials openly say that Karimov views South Korea and other Asian Tigers, such as Malaysia, as models for Uzbekistan?s development [12]. ?In doing so, he is not only crafting an economically positive narrative for the country?s future, but he also is balancing against China conceptually. Aware of the difficulties in using China?s growth pattern as a model to emulate, Uzbekistan sees countries like South Korea??as a more sound model to follow. The Asian Tigers are nearer in size to Uzbekistan and have managed the shift from a closed economy with authoritarian government to a more liberalized market economy well-integrated into the global economy.?In keeping Uzbekistan?s economy relatively closed, Tashkent is not only maintaining a tight control over its economy, but it is also trying to forge a relationship with China that is not overly dependant with the giant to the east.??So far, cautious diplomacy, protectionist economic measures and strategic diversification have allowed Uzbekistan to be the master of its own destiny without overly antagonizing any of its regional partners.

Conclusion

Unlike in other countries in Central Asia visited by the authors, the general perception of China in Uzbekistan is far more positive [13]. When asking generally about the Chinese presence in the country, Uzbeks are curious and positive with none of the vicious rumors heard in neighboring countries?such as Tajik rumors that the work crews sent to work on construction sites are prisoners and that Chinese men are marrying local women. In part, this is likely due to the absence of a direct border with China, meaning the fears of annexation and mass Chinese immigration are less. Uzbeks spoken to at Beijing-sponsored Confucius Institutes or those learning Chinese at local universities were learning about China and its language out of curiosity, a desire for work or an eagerness to travel. Chinese businessmen reported finding success and establishing roots. At the same time, however, Chinese firms have the same problems faced by other foreign firms in Uzbekistan, including difficulties with getting profits out of the country and an awkward local bureaucracy. Uzbekistan is not instinctively hostile toward China, but rather is quite closed to the outside world more generally.

What is interesting to note is the gradual geopolitical alignment that is increasingly visible between China and Uzbekistan, though it is one that from the outside seems more balanced toward trade than security matters. While clearly part of a larger Uzbek balancing strategy; from a Chinese perspective, the result is a net positive one that accords with a vision that has its eye on the longer-term. For Beijing, a stable and prosperous Central Asia is the goal, allowing for trade as well as providing China with natural resources. To achieve this, China is willing to play whatever game is required. Beijing is able to accommodate Uzbekistan?s tendency to behave as a cautious actor, investing and forging a relationship with the country at a pace that fits with Uzbek concerns and that looks beyond artificial deadlines. In this way, China is able to offer Uzbekistan a partnership that stands in contrast to the fickle Western approach that oscillates between friendship and condemnation, something that helps belie underlying Uzbek concerns of competition from the rising Asian giant. Hardly a partnership of equals, Beijing?s approach has ensured that it has continued to be able to focus relations with Tashkent on its interests in the country.

The security lines at JFK and LAX can be horrendous. But these airports have something in common worse than the gripes of jaded travelers. A new study finds that they, along with Honolulu International Airport, are the most likely to facilitate the spread of a major pandemic.

Researchers at MIT used real traveler patterns, geographical information and airport waiting times to predict what U.S. airports are most likely to spread an epidemic from its origin. The findings are reported in the journal Public Library of Science ONE. [Christos Nicolaides et al, A Metric of Influential Spreading during Contagion Dynamics through the Air Transportation Network]

The surprise is that the key airports are not necessarily the largest or busiest.

Previous research had focused on how easily pandemics can spread globally via air travel once they were in late stages. In those cases, the largest and best-connected airports are indeed the deadliest hubs. But the new work shows that in the first 10 days of an epidemic, other travel centers might be the spreading hot spots. This information could help improve control strategies when the next contagion strikes.

Producer prices rise despite drop in energy costs

Producer prices unexpectedly rose in June despite big drops in energy prices, a sign that some inflation pressures could keep the Federal Reserve on guard.

The Labor Department said on Friday its seasonally adjusted producer price index rose 0.1 percent last month. Analysts polled by Reuters expected the index to drop 0.5 percent.

The increase was driven by gains in consumer goods like household appliances, light trucks and pet food.

That led so-called core inflation, which strips out more volatile food and energy prices, to rise 0.2 percent, in line with expectations.

While overall inflation has cooled recently, core inflation has held at higher levels. Some policymakers at the Fed worry that further moves to lower borrowing costs could fuel higher inflation, though the central bank has said it was ready to do more to help the economy if needed.

Energy prices dropped 0.9 percent in June, dragged down by a record drop in prices for residential electric power, which fell 2.1 percent. Diesel fuel prices sank 8.8 percent.

The fall in energy prices is likely to help the economy as lower costs for fuels and other input prices leave companies more money to spend on other things, such as equipment or even hiring.

TORONTO (AP) - Terry Dunfield scored in stoppage time to give Toronto FC a 3-2 win over Vancouver on Wednesday night after a goalkeeping gaffe by Toronto seemed to give the Whitecaps a gift tie.

At the end of 90 minuts, Milos Kocic tried to punch away a high cross with one hand and missed it, leaving Darren Mattocks a clear header that sent the ball looping into the goal.

But Dunfield, a former Whitecaps player, rose and headed in the winning goal off a corner with just seconds left.

Until then, it seemed like goals by Torsten Frings and rookie Luis Silva three minutes apart in the second half would give Toronto FC a 2-1 win.

Recent spate of financial scandals raises ire in Washington

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - A fresh burst of scandals, including allegations that major banks tried to manipulate global benchmark interest rates and another case of missing customer funds at a futures brokerage, has raised Washington's ire on both sides of the political aisle.

One leading Republican in Congress blasted regulators for failing to detect banks' attempted manipulation of the London Interbank Offered Rate, or Libor, and House Republicans have requested documents to determine when U.S. regulators knew of problems with the index.

Some Democrats, meanwhile, called that scandal, and the discovery that Iowa-based futures broker PFGBest had misused more than $200 million of customer funds, proof of the need for tougher regulation of financial markets.

It is unclear what impact the growing anger in Washington will have on markets. The scandals could hamper the financial industry's efforts to scale back recent financial reforms or lead regulators to tighten rules, analysts said.

Observers do not expect Congress to step in yet.

"Based on what Congress has done up until now as these scandals pop up, no one should think that Congress is going to do anything too serious about this," said Dennis Kelleher of Better Markets, a nonprofit that advocates stricter regulation of financial markets.

Interest in the Libor scandal, in which Barclays Plc agreed to pay $453 million to settle allegations it gave false reports about lending rates in order to fiddle with the index, has been slow to build among lawmakers in Washington.

The scandal has so far been mostly confined to London, with Barclays executives resigning and a public outcry that regulation by the British government was lax.

But as concern over the consumer impact of the scandal grows and questions arise about the involvement of U.S. regulators, U.S. lawmakers have become more outspoken.

The index, which is calculated daily from rates submitted by the major banks, is the benchmark for numerous consumer lending rates. So while manipulating the index could allow a bank to make profits or mask liquidity problems, it would also boost or lower rates for mortgages and other loans.

Additionally, reports have surfaced that the Federal Reserve Bank of New York may have been alerted to the problem as early as 2007 but did little in response.

Representative Randy Neugebauer, who chairs the oversight and investigations subcommittee of the House Financial Services Committee, has asked the New York Fed to provide transcripts of communications with Barclays about interbank lending rates.

Financial Services Committee Chairman Spencer Bachus, also a Republican, seized on reports of the New York Fed's knowledge.

"The regulators since 2007 knew there were problems with Libor," he said during a hearing on Tuesday. "They knew there was a problem ... they didn't do anything about it," he said.

Senator Tim Johnson, a Democrat who leads the Senate Banking Committee, said on Tuesday his committee would ask Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke and Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner about the developments during hearings this month.

Geithner was president of the New York Fed from late 2003 through early 2009.

ONE IN A LIST

Representative Maxine Waters, ranking Democrat on the Financial Services subcommittee on capital markets, listed Libor among other recent scandals that she said show financial markets need to be reined in.

On the list were last year's implosion of futures brokerage MF Global and the discovery that $1.6 billion in investor funds had gone missing; JPMorgan's recent multibillion-dollar trading loss due to a massive bad bet in London; and the Facebook initial public offering, in which a collapse in the stock price slammed retail investors.

Lawmakers have railed against the parties involved and hauled several people, such as JPMorgan Chief Executive Jamie Dimon and former MF Global head Jon Corzine, in for hearings.

But those scandals did not lead to significant new legislation. Now some observers are looking at the PFGBest blowup as MF Global-2.0.

Observers said without a public outcry to match that in the UK, lawmakers in the United States would not try for a legislative response to the Libor situation.

Karen Petrou of Federal Financial Analytics said lawmakers' grandstanding is more likely to prompt action by industry regulators.

"What they will do through these hearings and document demands is put a lot of pressure on the regulators," Petrou said. "Despite the fact that Congress is hurtling toward the election and is incapable of doing an awful lot of much of anything, their inquiries do have an impact."

Gary Gensler, chairman of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, said on Tuesday that the futures regulator would work to protect benchmarks such as Libor from outside influence.

"Banks must not attempt to influence Libor or other indices based upon concerns about their reputation or the profitability of their trading positions," Gensler said.

But tough talk from regulators did not soothe Republicans.

"In the wake of MF Global, this latest failure raises serious questions about our current regulators and whether they are capable of doing their jobs," said Richard Shelby, the top Republican on the Senate Banking Committee. Rockville's Fall Sports League Registration Now Open

Youth and Adult Teams Available

ROCKVILLE, Md., July 9, 2012 - Make a plan to stay fit and social this fall by joining one of Rockville's many different teams. The City offers youth soccer, football and cross-country and adult softball, basketball, volleyball and kickball. More than 300 youth members and 100 adult teams participate in a fall league.

Youth soccer league games begin Saturday, Sept. 8, and games will be played in Rockville parks. Cross-country meets begins Saturday, Oct. 6, and both sports will hold practices once a week. Youth football play begins Labor Day weekend. For more information, visit http://www.rfl.cc/.

Start dates, schedules and costs for adult sports vary. Rockville offers men's softball and basketball, women's volleyball, and co-rec softball, volleyball and kickball.

Schoolchildren, troops join battle against dengue fever

Public health inspectors check a water sample as part of dengue fever clean-up operations

Schoolchildren and troops have joined forces in a massive nationwide clean-up, as part of National Dengue Control Month.

In?the campaign to beat the dengue virus, the children have been tasked with targeting places where mosquitoes breed and thrive.

Over 9,000 schools are involved in the initiative, cleaning and disinfecting the places where mosquitoes typically gather, both at their own school premises and in public places.

?The children have been removing any garbage piles and cleaning out blocked drains,? said Jacintha Wickramsinghe, a teacher at St. Lawrence Convent School in Colombo, ?and we?re continuing the clean-up operation every day.?

More than 10,000 military officers have joined them in their efforts by draining large pools of stagnating water.

Nalini Subasinghe, a social worker in Colombo, added that raising awareness was also a vital part of the campaign.? ?We are using posters, hoardings and leaflets to inform the public in almost every part of the country,? she said.

She has a particular motivation for being involved in the project. ?My neighbor?s 11-year-old girl died last week due to dengue haemorrhagic fever,? she said.

?She was a brilliant scholar, but now the little girl has passed away and her parents have lost their only child to dengue.?

Children are especially vulnerable to the disease, which has been growing rapidly around the world since the 1960s. Sri Lankan government figures show that, of the 15,500 people infected with dengue in the first five months of this year ? which proved fatal in 75 cases ? many?were children.

The government itself has contributed to the effort by strengthening the Mosquito Control Act. ?People who violate the Act will be subjected to fines ranging from 1,000 to 5,000 rupees,? said the Health Minister, Maithripala Sirisena. ?Violators could also face a prison sentence of up to six months.?

The World Health Organization classifies Sri Lanka as a ?Category A? country for dengue fever, which denotes that the disease is a leading cause of hospitalization and death among children; there are cyclical epidemics in urban areas; and the virus is a major public health concern.

Three other Southeast Asian countries share this classification: Thailand, Indonesia, and Timor-Leste.

Rowing It Alone: How to Paddle a Canoe Solo

Paddling on your own is like having a backstage pass to every overlooked lake cove and river slough. Take your canoe where you want, as fast as you want, without the hassle of coordinating strokes?and schedules?with a partner. Burt Kornegay, who owns Slickrock Expeditions, has guided more than 400 trips, but he still likes going out on his own. "There's a sense of freedom," he says. "You can go at it hard, or snooze all afternoon. And solo paddlers see so much more wildlife because they're quieter." Here's how to transition from two motors to one.

Bomb-Proof J-Stroke

1.Power / Plant the paddle blade in the water with the shaft vertical. Pull the paddle back in a straight line.

2.Transition / As the paddle blade passes your body, twist your hands down and out: The thumb of the top hand points toward the water, and the blade rotates a quarter-turn. It now lies parallel to the direction of travel.

3.Correction / Use your bottom hand to pry the blade away from the boat. Just a few inches of ruddering will tame a bit of bow drift, but more correction will require a hard push. (You're doing it right if your tricep muscle protests.)

4.Return / Need a bit more correction? Drag the blade tip through the water for a few inches as you bring the paddle forward.
